Tesla Model S could have done it
http://my.teslamotors.com/goelectric#range
I went to the page and looked at the range graph, It would have been way too close for comfort, I drove with the cruise control set between 75-85 with the A/C running most of the time, only slowing down for the small towns. The P85d is expected to have a 280 mi range. That would be the equivalent of having my gas light turn on 50 miles away from home. That 280 mi range is under ideal test conditions. I truly doubt it would make it.
The Tesla is also a car that starts at $70,000. That's around 70% of my yearly salary. My opinion and my opinion only, The Tesla is a rich man's toy with limited capabilities. The only way that it compares to the potential of an Elio is that the Tesla is also an "and" car. Unless you live in a city and never drive more than 200 to 250 miles in a day the Tesla couldn't be your only vehicle, you would need some other vehicle. $70,000 for an "and" car is just ridiculous for most Americans.
