I think that's an excellent question. But, I think the answer might be dependent on, "what is the business model?" The Tesla dealers drama likely affects any future considerations, and it's still not 100% concluded. I'm not even sure if Elio is doing this as directly owned, Franchised, or some form of contracted.

I live in an area that would make the Elio super popular. But because it's a satellite community there will not be any Elio stores right there. There WILL be Elio showrooms halfway to Phoenix. But I think there's a lot to be said for being right in our community. And at my location Saturday would be the Mother of all sales days, provided a test drive, or at least an example is on location. For my part I could maybe try to Partner with the 'Halfway' dealer and run an outreach activity on Saturdays. The question is, how-what am I paid for my participation?

As far as a formal dealer, that's a territory thing and likely as a franchise you likely would pay an amount for the exclusive rights. Probably there's no competing interest if your location were very remote. I believe the Smart Car exclusive dealer contracts were something like 120k in 2005, but covered a whole metro area or even a larger region. If Elio could garner that as a franchise from all proposed outlets, 60x100k = 60mil, or a good bit toward the extra cash they need to begin full production.

A SmartCar was more profitable in 2005 per vehicle than an Elio. But the volumes were lower (45-80 units/month), and the onsite facilities investment were lower too, but included show rooms for up to 6 cars, and no test drives. I have no idea how that would translate into Elio franchise contracts.

Something posted in another thread suggested a $250 referal bonus for anyone who you sent to their site to sign up. I think something like this would be much more practical and easier to manage. If you were to finance the remainder of your purchase through their "Gas Credit Card" program, then each of the $250 bonuses could be deducted from your balance.

Anyone hear anything about running an independent dealership that isn't a part of the "60 target market" depicted on the map? I'm interested in running my own shop, but haven't yet heard anything back.
Each showroom is owned by EM and each employee is paid by EM. You could maybe be a manager, but as for owning an out right dealership, I think will be out.

How much would you tack on to the car to help pay for your over head?
If you tacked on say,$3K, I would just go to a showroom and get it cheaper. JMO

Please read the information in the Elio Store tab of Elio Motors website. It explains Paul Elio's plans for selling Elios in fairly specific detail. There will be no dealerships at all only salaried staff at Elio owned sales rooms. This is one of the important points in the Elio plan so please take advantage of the provided information. In fact the EM website is a gold mine of information about Elio and the plans for it. :-) Z

I agree with Craig, based on the anticipated Elio direct to customer Sales Model..........I doubt independent dealerships are an option, but what about fleet purchasing Elio's and doing an Elio rental business and or specialty servicing for out of Pep Boy Market areas, along with selling and installing after market options? An Independent Specialty Elio Store.

Independent parts stores or shops typically do well in decent sized portions of the market that are highly specific such as BMW or Mercedes independent shops due to the specialty tools and training required to work on these niche vehicles. With the elio trying to make the elio where anyone with modest skills and tools(an excellent goal) can do many if not all of the repairs there is no real monetary advantage to "specializing" in elios. I was a BMW specialist and had no problem booking jobs 3 or 4 weeks out b/c there aren't many shops in our market qualified to work on them. If Pep Boys can work on them there will be no shortage of competition willing to give repairing/selling parts for elios a shot if they hit the sales goals they have laid out in a reasonable time frame.\\

The other side of the coin in this scenario is that if they are truly very easy to work on with minimal tools they will also be very easy for most people to modify them as well sot he market for aftermarket speed parts and other accessories could be remarkably huge. I fully expect to see several vendors stepping in to sell a plethora of elio modifications online.

EM + TM = ?
Not saying Elio Motors is connected to Tesla Motors on paper, but someone in EM is either talking to someone at Tesla marketing or they are copying some of their ideas. Some of you may not know, but Tesla does not sell their cars through a dealership either. Surprise, surprise, they have showrooms.

I am certain Elio Motors has studied what has been done by others and Tesla is definitely a good example as they trying to use a similar sales model right here in the USA. Another interesting example, which is too similar to Elio Motors to be just a coincidence, is what GM has been doing with one of their models in Brazil for well over a decade now.

GM has experimented with an interesting sales/manufacturing/delivery model outside the states:

Since 2000, customers in Brazil can order the Celta over the internet from a site that links them with GM's assembly plant and 470 dealers nationwide. By 2006, 700,000 Celtas had been produced and the car continues to be one of Brazil's best sellers. Consumers have 20 "build-combinations" from which to configure a model of their choice, including colors and accessories, and can view each change as it is being made. GM built five distribution centers throughout Brazil to reduce transportation time from its assembly plant and buyers can track location of their car online on its way to delivery at a dealer of their choice. The time from configuration at the factory to delivery is only about a week, in contrast to the several week wait that can be common in ordering a car in the United States. The Celta was designed by GM in collaboration with suppliers who deliver just-in-time pre-assembled modules to the factory. GM estimates that collaboration in design and manufacturing enabled it to use 60 percent fewer suppliers and 50 percent fewer parts than in a traditional assembly operation. According to Mark Hogan, president of e-GM at the time of the Celta's introduction, GM can sell Celtas 24 hours a day and enjoys a competitive advantage from reduced production time, lower inventory levels and an overall more efficient distribution and sales model where dealers need to stock only two models, one for the show room and one for test drives. Consumers benefit from Celta's online no-haggle pricing structure, where prices are about 6 percent lower than for sales made through conventional distribution channels. The price is lower because GM passes on to consumers some of the tax benefits it gets from the Brazilian government as a result of the reduced inventory and real estate associated with online sales.
