You can not avoid your own mortality by passing laws to protect others from theirs
For me it has nothing to do with mortality, but rather personal safety and protection against lawsuits, vehicular manslaughter charges, and seeing a family without their loved one that could have been avoided by wearing a seatbelt or helmet. Some laws are passed to protect individuals from themselves.

While I agree, seat belts and helmets have definitely saved my sorry ass, I'm so "personal decision/responsibility" leaning [just the way I was raised], I'll have to respectfully disagree. Idiots will do idiotic things, and make more mandates for 'everyone' to follow...I HATE being told what I can, and can't do.

You can't protect stupid people from doing stupid things...it's in their nature, and hopefully, they don't take anybody with them when they do what comes naturally.

You might "hate being told what you can and can't do", but that's not how you/we live it, so give up the hate, you HAVE to conform at a level that you might think is an incursion, but as mom always said- it's good for you. on your own island go as crazy as you want, living here with the rest of us, we each like to feel how special and independent we each are. It's infantile thinking, sort of like holding your breath if you don't get it your way.- "your sorry ass" is worth saving,it has meaning and when you stop throwing your toys you can have your hot cocoa and cookies.
Speaking of which I sign-off- it's XI:XXII and gonna get my P.Js night all

10-4, maybe "HATE" was a bit strong, and after a re-read, it does come off as a little "Whaaa, I can't have my way!"...Extremely aggravated would be more appropriate. I think my extreme aggravation is partly stemming from some brand-new 'rules' we have to abide by at work "in the name of safety".

Listen to this - Was: We have all the work areas marked off by bright yellow lines. Cross the lines, put your safety glasses on...makes sense, no problem, grinding and drilling metal in there...you're a dip if you don't wear them.

Now [as of 2 weeks ago]: As SOON as you enter the building safety glasses MUST be worn or risk getting a CAM (three CAMS, you're fired!). It's a good 100 yds. from the door I enter to the "shop floor", but I'm 'required by company mandate' to drop everything I'm carrying to put on my safety glasses to get my breakfast at the cafeteria o_O...and since everyone that works on the shop floor also eats their lunch on the shop floor, you, under threat of getting a CAM, MUST wear your safety glasses while you eat. Okay, I can shovel food as good as the next guy, I've never felt my eyes were at risk with a fork in my hand.

There's another "rule" about Ipod and cellphone usage that's just as ridiculous, and all in the name of 'safety', but I've got to get ready for work and can't go in depth on it [now where did I put those safety glasses?]

End re-rant... I feel better now.:)

I used to fly for the police; back then it was a new thing. The helicopter base was brand new and the "flavours of the month" were health and safety, alongside energy conservation (don't laugh, but what could be potentially less compliant than helicopter operations).
The building was built to the latest regulations, with energy saving lights which worked off IR sensors. In other words, they came on when someone entered the room, ans went off again after they left.

The cleaner used to come in overnight, during our down time. She was required to put out hazard warning signs advising us about wet floors being slippery. These were two foot high plastic easel stands, with a written placard on them.

One morning I was first in the building and needed to use the wash room. I went into the dark room (no windows) and immediately tripped headfirst over the "slippery floor" warning sign, thoughtfully put just behind the door. I skidded full length across the small room and slit my head open on a stainless steel earthing strip on the water pipes under the wash basin on the opposite wall. Then the lights came on.

The floor was, of course, completely dry - until I bled on it.

Letter of the law vs spirit of the law?
Cleaner did what they were told to do. And because they were told what to do, it removed all need for thinking and common sense.
Sorry about your melon!

This is the problem, these days. The state thinks it knows best (both sides of the big pond) but by introducing excessive legislation it just tends to remove the thought processes for applying common sense.

No matter how "idiot proof" you make something, there's always a better class of idiot waiting to outsmart the system. In the above case, me!

It must have been very weird for the cleaning person- if they stand/sit too long in one spot and they're in the dark! I do remember a study that said the energy used to start-up a cold bulb- was the same to just keep it on for a few hours. In my area the supermarkets use a motion devise, and as you are walking down the (freezer) aisles they light up sections as you go along- many large office buildings keep their lights on overnight for the savings they get by leaving 'em on. Sorry about your head, but the permeant damage is reflected in your posts, I'll go easier on you now ( i jest )
