I'm new to this forum, but joined the elio.org group in Oct 2013 with the big refundable deposit made then.
I hadn't seen Elio in the flesh yet and did not go all-in until I am satisfied he is Honda quality in build/fit/finish.

The auto industry is huge and because of public safety there are also huge hurdles to cross in putting a vehicle to market.
Elio is also crossing a unique hurdle with the helmet issue.....w/o that, he is doomed. The funding issues are in part due to Govt hurdles to cross.

And let's not forget the political side. There are the Big 3 plus others, Honda, Toyota, etc., that want Elio to fail. Nothing personal.....strictly business.

I've entered big on the deposit because I want Elio to succeed, but know it will not be an easy go of it and need the option to get out if the worst happens.

This was my ride a couple of years back. I still own bikes and am waiting for Honda to bring out the 3rd gen ST13.

I believe the elio will be built, but with all the delays and problems in building a car company, the numbers will have to go up. Today base is $6800. EM has said several times they have not gone under $7000. So lets do the math shall we! A base elio with a 5 speed and no options will be about $6995 when it rolls off the line in july 2015 as a 2016 model. You add the $400 destination fee and you get a sticker of $7395. The dealer prep is about $150, and that comes to $7545. I estimated the state and local and motor vehicle tags to be 5-6%. $7545 x 6% is $452 so the total is $7997. That is $8000 for a basic elio. Add an automatic and if it is the dual clutch, figure $1200, if the AMT, $600. and cruise will be at least $300. Total for an automatic dct and cruise is about $9500, a little less, or a little more with different options. The AMT is $9000 +. BTW, Over 90% of all vehicles sold are auto . Ok, my figures are all estimates, but they are not far off. The price is incredibly reasonable in todays car market, but the public has been conditioned to only see the $6800. When the salesman or finance guy gives you the contract , the real question is do you pull out the pen and sign it. We will see in about 15 months. Glad to be part of the group. (mine will be blue with alsa chrome fenders and rear panel and a chrome lighting stripe door handle high.
It's not a matter of "if" but "when" it can be built? Funding is the big question mark. The final sticker price (base or w/ options) will shock most reservists but will buy it anyway including those where money is no object because of it's unique features and be part of "HISTORY". I know I do. This is no T-Rex (equivalent to about 6 Elios) or Can Am ( equivalent to about 2) which I almost bought but it has "CREATURE COMFORTS" not found on these two. The observers and pessimists on the other hand are just waiting in the wing for this project to fall apart and confirm their suspicion that EM and their Elio car is a big hoax or scam. Now ask yourself a question....which group do you belong???;)

In all honestly, for $6,800.00 I really don’t care about quality or style when it comes to getting my hands on this car. I have a 2002 Chevy Cav and for the last three years I have been trying to design a three wheeler using this car. Everything from cutting it off behind the drivers compartment and adding half a motorcycle to it, or keeping the motor up front and adding a third wheel. I will be happy just to get a hold of the basic superstructure. I’m sure after that, I can make it into a fine running and looking machine.

OH does not have emission/equipment inspections, so you could modify a vehicle. Over here in WV, we have 'equipment' inspections, (no emissions) and would have a problem w/a modification. PA has both.

But I agree, the price point is the main attractor for Elio, with MPG a close 2nd reason. I feel the production delay has more to do with regulation and getting the green light for production, than funding, which is nothing but borrowed money.

My # would probably be about a 6 at this point.

I disagree I feel funding is the show stopper here.. It's going to cost a fortune to tool a plant for production not to mention salaries etc. Elio definitely lacks funding period..

Yes the auto industry is huge, the Elio not an automobile. It will have to meet motorcycle standards, not automobile. I see emissions standards here:
http://www.epa.gov/otaq/roadbike.htm I found brakes, controls and displays here:http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/FMVSS/index.html The fact that this is classified as a motorcycle is what allows it's price to be so low (less regulation, certification).

How many cars does the Detroit 3 have below $15k? How about Toyota(Scion) Kia, Hyundai, etc. I think an entry level commuter car has more to lose when the Elio comes out, Detroit has 3 has very, very few in that price range. If anything the Elio would help, more than hurt Detroit automakers. Big trucks, cars, suv's would sell. Use the Elio to commute to work, use the big vehicle on the weekends or when transporting the family.
EDIT: spelling

Ask yourself a question...if any of the big 3 or their Japanese and Korean counterparts like Toyota, Nissan, kia, Hyundai or Mazda take on the same 3 wheeler project like EM does, do you really think with their almost unlimited resources take that long to mass produce it? Funding is "everything" and it's not "just borrowed money" when NOBODY IS LENDING!!! ;)
