Not sure that this is done via rotating plate. Why use an analogue disk, if you end up with a digital display? A small rounded digital display will make it appear as if the numbers rotate. Look at the radius of the small (in the prototype) display on top vs the radius of the instrument it sits in.
I saw the dash in Richmond. The plate does not rotate, the numbers 'rotate' behind the plate, so what you read is in the hole in the plate.
I suppose you could remove the disk and always have the needle pointing up, but this seems silly.
Also, I believe that it's digital and just gives the appearance of rotating.

The real issue for me is cost . Is Elio spec'ing this dash because no one else will use it ? Are there tens of thousands of these sitting in some warehouse ? If this oddball dash meets Elio's criteria of keeping component costs low , fine . However , my assumption is that there is a "standard" analog dash out there that will be more conventional and cheaper .
I like the idea of Elio being delivered without a dash at all . Simple interface and mounting area that can link to a customer's 7"/10" Tablet . Customize your own view , data delivery and additional features.

Hi Comp.
I think the "plate" that Bert was talking about was the "inner" plate with the numbers on it.
Yes, you read the numbers "in the hole" of the "outer" plate.
If my bet is correct, it's the whole inner plate (with the numbers on it) that rotates.
I seriously doubt that it's a digital display that's set up to "simulate" an analog disc.
The radius (or rather circumference) is big enough to accomadate those numbers in 0 - 120 with room to spare.

There are more like minded people here than there are otherwise. Please look at the polls again.
Quite the contrary as far as these polls not being representative.
This site is mostly frequented by an existing and potential customer base? Right?
Potential investors care very deeply about the apparent stability of an investment's leadership.
Stability is gauged by the motives behind the CEO's business tactics and decisions among other things.
... and sometimes by the CEO's business tactic of going against the common trend... Steve Jobs did that, didn't he?

It is probably safe to say that the majority of people would rather have something different for a dash than the Lord Elgin dash that the Elio is going to have. We can argue that Paul isn't listening to the masses and going off and doing something on his own without regard to his customers but let's stop and think for a minute.

The general population prefers four wheels to three. it's true. There's a reason you don't see many three wheel vehicles and perceived tipping and safety are just a couple. Anyway, my point is that we (including me somewhat) want to sit here and condemn Paul for producing a dash that many don't like (even though they haven't seen it in the dash and probably won't be able to drive so aggressively in the Elio to warrant needing a "faster dash"). Why don't we condemn Paul for producing a vehicle with only 3 wheels. I mean, when it comes down to it, most people prefer 4 wheels. Also, I'd rather pay the $10 for real hood latches. Why is he making a car with those snap closures? The list, of course, goes on. At some point, the person in charge has to make a decision. For Paul, he likes the dash, it's his company, and he probably won't lose enough sales over the dash to worry about it.

I don't see this as the failings of a CEO to take into account his customer base but rather a CEO who made a decision he can live with while not compromising the basis of the company.

In a side note, the more I see the Lord Elgin dash, especially in renderings in the Elio, the more I'm coming around to it. I prefer a good needle swing but it's not like I'll be glued to the Tach to get someone off the line...

Sorry but... I just hate that thing!

agree .... my hope is it won't take long for some aftermarket source to come up with a reasonably priced replacement .... I have little doubt that if/when someone does, they will find a good market .... I do find it to be entertaining to ponder on what to do with the Elgin once it is exorcised from our Elio ..
