Hi Comp.
I think the "plate" that Bert was talking about was the "inner" plate with the numbers on it.
Yes, you read the numbers "in the hole" of the "outer" plate.
If my bet is correct, it's the whole inner plate (with the numbers on it) that rotates.
I seriously doubt that it's a digital display that's set up to "simulate" an analog disc.
The radius (or rather circumference) is big enough to accomadate those numbers in 0 - 120 with room to spare.

You are correct! The outer chrome plate (pasties) covers a rotating inner plate. The outer plate has the "pointer". This inner plate is a replacement for the needle pointer we're used to seeing.
So, if nothing else, put a needle pointer on the pin the rotating numbered plate is on, with that same plate behind the needle! Waala! you have a normal looking speedometer!!
This presumption is based on the vidio of the Elgin dash working. It looks analog to me, not digital.

Vote for a repeal of the Elgin dash now that I would vote for.

THE GOLIATH TRUCK CAME FROM THE BRUCE WEINER COLLECTION .

BRUCE BOUGHT IT IN GERMANY AND SENT IT OVER WITH THE IDEA OF YET
ANOTHER UNIQUE VEHICLE TO DISPLAY IN THE MICROCAR MUSEUM .

THEY HAD STARTED A FULL RESTORATION BUT THINGS DIDN'T WORK OUT
AND THE PROJECT WAS ABANDONED .
I BOUGHT IT AS A LITERAL PILE OF PARTS 4 YEARS AGO .
THE BODY PANELS WERE ALREADY RESTORED & PAINTED !

THERE WERE QUITE A FEW MISSING PARTS . I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO BEG , BORROW ,
FABRICATE SUBSTITUTE AND ENGINEER MY OUT OF A LOT OF PROBLEMS !

I REALLY HAVE COME A LONG WAY . I STILL NEED TO DO THE WIRING , BRAKES & INTERIOR .

The real issue for me is cost . Is Elio spec'ing this dash because no one else will use it ? Are there tens of thousands of these sitting in some warehouse ? If this oddball dash meets Elio's criteria of keeping component costs low , fine . However , my assumption is that there is a "standard" analog dash out there that will be more conventional and cheaper .
I like the idea of Elio being delivered without a dash at all . Simple interface and mounting area that can link to a customer's 7"/10" Tablet . Customize your own view , data delivery and additional features.

We get the question of cost often and the answer is the cost is actually the same as the Elgin instrument panel does not need any new hardware. The Elgin speedo and tach gauges may appear very different however these are simply analog gauges with a number disk mounted on them instead of a needle and a piece of plastic over them so there is actually no difference in terms of actual hardware needed.

It also helps to understand a bit about how the OEM supplier business operates. Instrument panel designs are proprietary, specific to each vehicle's needs, and the designs are owned by each respective vehicle manufacturer. OEM instrument panels are also not just sitting around stockpiled in warehouses waiting to be installed in new vehicles as the industry just does not work that way. Each instrument panel is also built to order, using 'just in time' manufacturing, with exact specifications and interfaces intended for the vehicle it will be installed in or as a spare replacement for those vehicles.

There aren't any moving parts in the Lord Elgin dash though, right? I could swear they said it would be a couple of small LED screens emulating moving numbers.

From what we were told early last year it does appear that at one time EM was considering using digital displays for the Elgin however it would appear that since then they have moved away from that idea. What we have seen and heard in recent months is that the Elgin design is to be based on standard gauges with the needle replace with a number disc. Of course as EM continues working with their partners and moves into the testing phase where they begin building and testing the vehicles it is likely that the design of the instrument panel will continue to evolve.

Wow! That's the kind of project I'd love to have the room for. I rebuilt a 1960 Falcon that I rescued from a trip to the dump for $100. It was a four door Falcon and you just don't see many of those around. Anyway, when we moved, I wasn't even going to have room to store it so it had to go. I wish I'd have kept that one. But, I am jealous of your project there. Keep us posted. My wife doesn't mind as much when I'm living vicariously through others.
