REAL airplanes are Experimental home-builts. They are the "Hot-Rods" and "Sports Cars" of airplanes.
BTW, Ever see a military fighter with a "steering wheel"? Also check out the Airbus A380.

P38, Spitfire, Bell X1, U2
P-38 I'll give you.
Spitfire had a stick, not a yoke. There was a "ring" on top of the stick, but it did not operate like a yoke.
Bell X1 was not a fighter. U2 was not a fighter. Both these aircraft were designed to fly mostly straight and level.

The ring on top of the spitfire stick was the yoke. The stick didn't move sideways for roll control. Only fore and aft for pitch. The top 5 or 6 inches with ring moved sideways for roll. At high speeds and G loading they would sometime need both hands to roll it. The reason for the ring was so if your hand was shot off you could stick your stump through the ring and limp home. Both the X1 and the U2 used the control column and yoke adapted from the P38.
