Seriously? The Gas Cap Has A Real Unmodifiable Reason To Be On The Wrong Side?

Oregon and New Jersey come up from time to time on several car forums. It seems it's being called a "safety issue" - as though having some "trained and qualified" attendant pumping your gas will prevent accidents. Hoo-boy, they sure missed the mark if they think charging an extra 10¢ per gallon will get you a minimum-wage safety expert. I can't believe some mouth-breathing stoner is going to be any more careful about scratching my gas flap or running fuel down the side of my car than I will. Yeah, it's a political thing.

Fortunately for tourists, you can fill up in Washington and visit all of Oregon's scenery for several days in your Elio. I know a gas station a couple miles south of the California state line. ;)

I was just thinking the same thing. I bet that adds a considerable cost to the gas. I know the very few full service stations here in Texas (and they are very few and far between) charge much higher for their gas. And I beleive I read the Oregon (maybe just Portland) just raised minimum wage considerably. Thay will add even more costs. I like having a choice ;)

You will pay a lot more for gas in Washington and California because Oregon has no sales tax. Also, at least at the Costco where I get gas, I would never consider any of the employees are as you describe. Safety and courtesy is important and at least at Costco they are well paid. I can't vouch for other stations. :-) Z

Maybe they should put the filler cap on the back end and please everyone. No bias towards left or right wingers.

But no need here in UK. We have two marvellous inventions called the long pump hose and back to back fuel pumps.
Had a center rear filler on my old Mustang which worked out pretty well - except that the filler pipe was exposed at the rear edge of the trunk. As if that wasn't dangerous enough, the top of the gas tank also served as the bottom of the trunk. Not a good idea to throw anything heavy with sharp corners in there . . . BOOM!

GM had the Brilliant Idea in the '60's and '70's to hide the gas filler in the rear bumper behind the license plate. I dare you to fill the tank without getting your shins bathed in gas when the tank ran over and blew the last pint back at you, or scraping the back of your hand against the license plate as the aggressive spring slammed the mousetrap on you as you withdrew the nozzle. There are some Brilliant Ideas that are best left alone.

I hope Elio meets or beats my good customer service experiences that COSTCO provides.

I LOVE the Elio the name is an inside joke between me and my daughter.

And i have a honda fit with the gas filler on the left side and my wheels are flush with the door, never once have I hit a gas pump. With the stance of this car it would be all but impossible.

As far as safety is concerned for road side, you still have to exit stage left.
(Never ran out of gas aside from once I borrowed a friends car and he didn't tell me the gauge was not working)

Bottom line filler needs to be on the left.
It needs to be away from the only exit door the vehicle has... fire, bad... fire in front of only door while your kid is asleep in the backseat, very bad. Besides, it really doesn't matter in the "filling up" realm unless you are on the side of the road. Sure, you get out on the left but you are only exposed to traffic for a second or two. Then, you can be on the safer side while filling it up. I'm guessing that you don't live in a windy area because I've seen plenty of people who get surprised by the wind and hit the pump guard with a door. Why does the filler "need" to be on the left? My truck is on the left and my wife's car is on the right. They are both very simple to fill and I can't see it really mattering. I guess a REALLY lazy or handicapped person might care, but why should anyone else? Personally, I'd rather have the stinky nozzle away from my door. And that's as good a reason as any. Well, that and the whole engineering thing where it's easier to go down the side without a door part.

Those three states you mention... basically, the West Coast, have the highest average fuel prices in the nation according to gasbuddy.com

  • Nancy LinsleyIs there some reason the fuel filler door cannot be on the same side as the entry door? It would make it more convenient for filling and leave the right side more open for add ons and modifications.
