Har de har har. I know you are just kidding me... But, when working at that GM factory, I spent a lot of my time redesigning the "cross body harness station" which is a fancy way of saying "the work station that installed the wire loom that goes from inside the cab into the engine bay". :D

After seeing several comments around the web, and a video on the elioclub.org (they deserve cred for the first attempt at looking at this area) all questioning an anomaly noticed on the engine, so I thought I'd take a closer look at too.

What I'm looking at is the end plate covering the camshaft which seems to be "blurred" or "transparent" or "polished" depending on the blog you're reading. I downloaded the Elio Motors video in 720p, cropped it as much as I could using the student version of FCP, so you could see what others are talking about, and layered a description of what I think it is on top, and loaded it back up to You Tube. No other editing was done.

At first I was pretty sure it was just reflective metal, since I can see what looks like florescent lights or control room window with lights reflected, however after staring at it for some time, to me it now looks like a plexiglass window into what's happening inside. You be the judge....:)

Interesting.
But based on the motion that it makes, opposite of the back-and-forth motion that the motor makes, I'd be more inclined to go with a reflection. When the motor goes one way, the 'reflection' or whatever it is, seems to go in the opposite direction which would be more consistent with a reflection than a window into the inside.
Just a thought...

Someone mentioned this on a thread here a few days ago however I had not really looked at it. I downloaded a 1080P version of the original video onto my computer and streamed it to my TV so I could see it on the big screen easily and it does look to me like a clear cover. If it is I am guessing that as this engine already has a separate cam gear cover it was easy for IAV to cut a plexiglass cover which allows them a little bit of extra visibility into what is happening during testing.

I was doing my usual Monday morning scan on stories about Elio when I came across this one in The Truth About Cars.
Not particularly pro or con. Just a nice fairly objective story.

I thought the really interesting thought came in the comments section from someone identified as "MrGreenMan."

"Their own engine might cost a lot more up front, but investors understand a one-time, amortized cost versus one that scales with sales."

And don't forget.......... It's their engine and they might be able to sell some outside of the car.

Looks like a reflection of the stand. If you look at the whole picture, seeing as how it is filmed from above and slightly right, the reflection (assuming the part is just about vertical) would be of the flat bar in the bottom left of the video. It's also about the right size.

I don't think there was anything done in that area... plexiglass doesn't make sense. It would be almost instantly covered in oil from the inside and unclear. I think it's just that it's the only flat piece of metal that faces front. In this little picture, you can see it reflecting the pulley in front of it a little bit. I think the video just highlights it's satin finish and the reflection of the relatively dark floor and stand with the exception of that aluminum leg that sticks out in the left bottom of the video. Seeing inside from that "port", if it DID manage to stay clear, would be relatively boring. You'd be looking at the side of a simple gear. You wouldn't see much other than a gear going around. Who cares about that?
