What if, instead of JATOs, you mounted a couple of pulse jets on either side of the rear half? Replace the rear seat with a kerosene fuel tank. When you want to lay on the speed (and deafen everybody within a 5 mile radius) you just light up the jets and rocket on home. :D

Not enough thrust for me. But it would keep the tailgaters at bay. I like the way you're thinking!

Maybe we need to start a thread just for "anti-idiot" devices. :D
I've got some ideas!

Ok, now you're just being silly, I mean the noise, the mufflers alone would kill it..

Yes. You're onto something. But I'd advise checking with the ATF/NSA/FBI/CIA and every other government acronym before you open your wallet for a set of JATOs [Russia Ebay maybe?]. PM me if you get approval. ;)

Well, the V-1 buzz bomb weighed over 4000 lbs, and it flew with just a single pulse jet putting out 550lbs of static thrust (which is why it needed a catapult to get it moving fast enough for takeoff). The Elio is nearly a third of that weight, so I'm sure we can get it to fly with a little ingenuity :p

One such device:

Can you imagine the fun Ben Hur chariot races we could have with these on a bunch of Elios with the wheel covers off?

An electric motor driving that lone rear wheel... say, 50 HP.
My brother saw a 50hp electric motor come up at auction a few weeks ago. The winning bidder had to use a forklift to get it into his truck. He estimated the weight at 650 lbs...so, good luck with that!:ballchain: :biggrin1:
