Hyundai, settled a large class action lawsuit "fudging milage" wonder if that might reduce the desire for manufacturers to "exaggerate" the real mpg?
What are the standards to determine city/highway mpg? consistent throughout the industry?? Internationally?
thanks

OK, I guess I can jump in here. The case of getting 100mpg, is it possible? Yes, I worked in vehicle research for 4 years of college and then as a researcher for two after that. We had what visually looks like a supercar version of a Miata, and we regularly tested 100mpg-118mpg with those. None of that was hybrid technology. google 'western Washington university Viking 45' or 40 or .. (see below)
For many reasons car manufacturers don't try too hard to match those results. Mostly because we won't buy it at top dollar. Opel did make one racer that got 113mpg, for Europe. http://www.flixxy.com/fuel-economy-performance-car.htm

This video makes the point.

But of course how you drive matters. My 2014 Prius is rated 54mpg, but I can get anywhere between 39 and 70mpg, based on how I manage it. My icon car to your left, I'm expecting 120mpg in it when I drive it -nice-. This is of course dependent on me outfitting it correctly.

So what does it take to get to 100mpg? Light weight, small profile, good aerodynamics, correct gearing, small-ish and efficient engine, light gross weight, drive gingerly.

Anyway, google up the 'California Commuter Car 157mpg', for a trike-motorcycle that gets over 100mpg. A conventional motorcycle by itself is usually dismal aerodynamics.

Three problems with the XL1, John:
1. Not available in the USA.
2. Not available to mere mortals. ($150,000 base price)
3. Not available. 250 units total.

Those specs are for the second-generation (2010+) Insight. The first-generation Insight (1999-2006) is one-liter 3-cylinder rated at 53 MPG combined, 61 highway, which to this day remains the highest all-gasoline economy of all time. Plug-ins don't count.
I'm aware of all that, the OP was about the possibility of 84mpg from a 900cc+ engine. Very doable. :D

If you click on the link, then open the other tabs, you will get a better understanding of what happens during the tests. I believe the link opens on the first tab.

I like the "test details" the best.

Here's the link for the EPA tests.

When I was trying to chase this stuff down I came across some references that indicate US tests are tougher than EU and most other countries.

the P5 will have an IAV motor built for Elio Motors .... Paul stated earlier this week in an interview that it will not be exactly like the production motor .... he didn't give any more details than that

in another thread about the tour stop today in Portland, Daryl M provided us with some clarification on the above .... the exert below was taken from his full report which can be seen in post 9 at this link

Trip Report for the Portland, Oregon Elio event at Washington Square on September 12, 2015.

I went to the Portland, Oregon Elio event at Washington Square today.

Here are the questions I asked and the answers I received:

Q: Will the IAV engine in the P5 have the two-step cam?
A: Yes, both the test engine we saw running in the video, and the P5 engine have the two-step cam.

Q: Paul has said that the engine going into the P5 is not the production version. What will the differences be?
A: The production engine will incorporate changes for things discovered from the test engine, running the P5, and the findings from the engineering engines. Basically the expected tweaks and tuning needed to get from the prototype engine to production.

Some observations:
  • The test engine (from the video) and the engine for the P5 are essentially the same engine. Any differences will be minor.
  • For a "first article", the engine is doing very well. It is meeting or exceeding the power target and only 3MPG below the mileage target. As they look at the wear patterns in the test engine, we will start to get an idea of whether the reliability will be there.
