interesting concept but I tend to believe that its too late in the process to redesign/engineer the body .... if the final number is just below the magic 84, some (mostly haters) will loudly proclaim the whole project is a failure .... the same is true if the base price comes in a penny over $6,800 .... it really won't bother me either way .... there is no doubt they could improve the mileage but doing so will come at a cost .... that cost is the tightrope EM is walking in a strong effort to make both "must haves" happen

I'd gladly pay a few hundred bucks more if it meant hitting 84mpg or better. Hell, if the base price was $10,000 for the mpg to sit at 115+, I'd gladly take that too.

I PUT A CHEVY 350 IN A MERCEDES 240D .
IT WORKED OUT PRETTY NICELY AND THE GM 5-SPEED MADE IT FUN .

IT COULD STILL GET 20+ MPGs AND PROVED PRETTY
RELIABLE IN THE 60,000 MILES THAT I PUT ON IT .

Noooooo!!!!!!! That's like replacing a New York strip for a McDonald's burger patty at Ruth's Chris! A 240D needs a proper engine if you are to make a hot rod out of it, a 5.0l M119 would be quite nice for example.

Trust me, there's nothing worse than putting a V8 where a rotary used to be, those RX7 guys are BRUTAL about their religious fanaticism on Wankel engines! I've given up on defending it anymore to the Mazda crowd...

I have nothing against a good engine swap, especially for a V8. I'm just not a fan of unoriginal. A Chevy V8 into almost anything is kind of unoriginal. A Caddy 472/500 for example in to an RX-7 is a win all day long, with it's intermediate block dimensions and weight it pretty much fits anywhere a 350 fits. So much cooler though!

Well it gets a bit tricky when you tread new ground, putting an turbo V6 from a Grand Nash would have been cooler, but there are already kits for putting a 302 into an Rx7 (motor mounts, linkages, cross members etc) and most of all there are plenty of people to ask questions if you get stuck on something. Braking new ground is cool, but it can be a pain in the butt when you get jammed and there's nowhere to turn for experienced help.

THIS WAS A BIG CHEAP CAR THAT I GOT FOR 500 BUCKS
I GOT IT WITH A BLOWN ENGINE . IT WAS A 4 SPEED FROM THE FACTORY .

I SOLD THE TRANNY TO SOMEONE WHO NEEDED IT AND GOT A SWEETHEART DEAL
ON A NEW LONG BLOCK 350 FOR $1200 .

IN THE END I JAZZED IT UP WITH THE FULL GLASS EURO HEADLIGHTS
AND A HUGE WEBASTO SUNROOF .

I HAD LOTS OF GOOD FUN DUSTING OFF THE 300TD GUYS .

ON THE DOWNSIDE , PEOPLE WERE ALWAYS TRYING TO PASS ME OUT ON THE ROAD
THINKING IT WAS A SLOWPOKE WITH THE 240D NOMENCLATURE .

-keep in mind, a 1970 Corona is about as big as a 1970 VW bug, maybe a few inches longer at most.

Was not so long ago that 300HP made you a bad boy. That is routine for a six and more than a few 4's today.
Yep, the Chevota, couldn't pop a wheelie. Somehow the CG and hp was right such that it just went forward rather than pop. Had a kegger gas tank up front. But, man, did it ever go! I simply didn't need 1st gear, total waist of time. Just used 2nd and 3rd. Clutching on second felt like 1st gear, cept all said and done you could be going 30-55 at that point. Maybe 1st could have popped, didn't actually try very hard for a wheelie.

Oh, I know exactly what a Corona is! I like, but a chevy? I have personally seen two Chevy powered Coronas and three powered by Supra engines. All cool, but tell me a Toyota V8 from a Lexus or a full size Toyota wouldn't be super cool! Come on. I dare you..... LOL this is fun. My mind is going wild with all the possibilities!
