A Hemi is way more appropriate than a Chevy in your Caravan. I think theRe are laws against baterdizing a Mopar with a Chevy engine.

Trust me, there's nothing worse than putting a V8 where a rotary used to be, those RX7 guys are BRUTAL about their religious fanaticism on Wankel engines! I've given up on defending it anymore to the Mazda crowd...

Welcome OldAFGuy! The Elio has reached 81mpg in early evaluations. They are going to try and reach 84mpg (real world) on the PE models.

that info has been quoted by Paul and other senior EM personnel for a good while .... most recently, yesterday, at the tour stop in Portland where Daryl M (one of our forum members) was told :

"For a "first article", the engine is doing very well. It is meeting or exceeding the power target and only 3MPG below the mileage target. As they look at the wear patterns in the test engine, we will start to get an idea of whether the reliability will be there."

if you haven't done so already, you can read the rest of his report in post #9 at this link .... the IAV motor has been designed specifically for the Elio with a target of 84 mpg in mind .... it appears to be an amazing bit of engineering that has 12 to 1 compression ratio and is designed to burn 87 octane gasoline .... in addition the lower weight and drastically reduced wind resistance of an Elio most certainly plays a major role ... as but one example the windshield wiper on the P5 will be hidden so as to reduce drag .... when you get down to that level, you know that every option available to improve mileage is being explored

Yes, I do! Especially if I can get retractable missile launch tubes mounted on the side and a laser cannon that will pop up out of the roof, with custom license plates that read MONGO. (Don't worry, I'll come up with an appropriate phrase for that acronym.)

It makes me wonder, if there's so much extra room in the cabin, why don't they shave it down overall by an inch or two and cut down on the wind resistance even more? Perhaps that would net them the extra 3mpg?

But honestly, I would prefer they somehow get the engine to make the 84mpg and not have to cut down on the car any more.

interesting concept but I tend to believe that its too late in the process to redesign/engineer the body .... if the final number is just below the magic 84, some (mostly haters) will loudly proclaim the whole project is a failure .... the same is true if the base price comes in a penny over $6,800 .... it really won't bother me either way .... there is no doubt they could improve the mileage but doing so will come at a cost .... that cost is the tightrope EM is walking in a strong effort to make both "must haves" happen
