I wanted a PT Cruiser when they came out. Went to the dealership and the price was $10,000 over invoice due to demand. Told them To KMA, never went back and lost all interest in the car, now I think their ugly!

I had a 2005 Cruiser convertible with a turbo. Couldn't get rid of it fast enough! I had nothing but trouble. Bearings, shocks, turbo was starting to go bad.

From VW bug wiki... "and by March 1946 the factory was producing 1,000 cars a month (in Army khaki, under the name Volkswagen Type 1),["
and .. "By 2002, over 21 million Type 1s had been produced, but by 2003, annual production had dropped to 30,000 from a peak of 1.3 million in 1971"

The Wiki says.. The initial restriction in VW sales was due to new small models from Japan, and I'm sure by 2003 from all the other 'small' models from all other Asian producers.

On another site. "By 1968, as many as 423,008 Beetle vehicles a year were being sold in the United States" (us population in 1968- 200m, 2013- 316m)

While Elio stands alone, sales could be very good indeed. While the base price stays low competition will be reluctant to jump in the game.

This is a re-post of this information:
From Edmonds Ford Mustang History:

"Even Ford was shocked at America's appetite for the Mustang during '65. It sold an astounding 409,260 coupes, 77,079 2+2 fastbacks and 73,112 convertibles that year. That's a total of 559,451 Mustangs for the '65 model year."
"Incredibly, the '66 was even more popular than the '65 and Ford sold 607,568 of them — 499,751 coupes, 35,698 2+2s and 72,119 convertibles."

That was 50 years ago.....

Wow, yes let's go on.. to the Pinto..
"By January 1971, the Pinto had sold over 100,000 units [9] and 352,402 for the entire 1971 production run. 1974 saw the most Pintos produced in a single model year with 544,209 units"

And this was an economy oriented model with -lots- of competition. Being of that type, cost saving, it does lend itself to market modeling for the Elio, as does the WV bug. Both car had lots of people suspicious about the crash and driving safety attributes of the cars.

Should we bother to look at Camaro's and Firebirds? There are a number of car models in the US that sold over 250k units per year. Question settled.

--added.. Camaro - Production for the 1967 model year totaled 220,906. 235,147 Camaros were built for the ‘68 model year

In my younger days, I had the privilege of spending a year on the Ford Motor Company's assembly line. We were making 1969 Mercury cars and wagons, full-size, at the rate of 43 per hour. 1500 employees, two 10 hour shifts, turning out 860 cars a day. It would take 291 days like that to produce 250,000.
With a much simpler car surely many more per hour could be produced.
I do believe the logistics of producing 250,000 motor vehicles is a daunting job. Start-up involves a lot of ground-up facets, such as supply and delivery,
that will all have to flow smoothly to manufacture and distribute 685 vehicles a day, year-round.
That's why I'm gonna pick MY Elio up in Shreveport!:)

I PERSONALLY LOVE THREE WHEELED VEHICLES

AND I LOVE MOTORCYCLES

(and DOGS)

i have owned/driven over 35 three wheel vehicles in the past 62 years

people are always blown away when they see one going down the road !

this is NOT A NEW CONCEPT !!

we are all here because we have put down our hard-earned $ to order one of these unusual three wheeled vehicles..

i do NOT think AMERICANS will give up their SUV's until there is a CRISIS , and they are FORCED to !

I sincerely hope I am wrong ..

rainy day in the Caribbean, but still 84 degrees, off to Town on my Yamaha TW200
