Keep your eye on Food processing companies, HMO's, meat processing companies, and just see self regulation, once FDA leaves a plant, for some unknown reason salmonella incidents seem to go up, Chinese imports of chickens (ugh) what's that all about except corporate greed!! Most recent, health supplements some of which had zero ingredients listed on label.
On and on how if left to "self regulation, the public has no alternatives, and in many cases price trumps safety- Car recalls anyone? the weigh the cost of kills vs profit to see if they should cut profits. PLEASE!

I don't happen feel the regulations placed on the US Auto Industry are 'crap'. Corporations do not voluntarily self-regulate. Corporate Auto would not have voluntarily provided us with the safe and high mpg vehicles on the road today, as it's all about profit. Also, the regulations are supported by loan program options like the ATVM that may actually provide the opportunity for the new Elio Motors to succeed and the established big auto manufacturers like Ford Motors having received $5.9 Billion in ATVM Loan approval to upgrade manufacturing facilities and develop higher mpg Ford options. Other ATVM Loans approved: Nissan $1.9 Billion, and Tesla $450 Million. Elio's $240 Million is peanuts by comparison. I hope it's added to the list of loan approvals soon.

It seem's that Paul Elio is self regulating his motorcycle to auto standards, but it's mandatory, otherwise he would have no market for his commuter vehicle. I feel safer as a consumer with the mandated regulations that large Corporations oppose.

Yep, exactly, that was my point too, no mom's or any other non-motorcycle enthusiast. How safe is it? is still one of the first questions asked. EM's road to success will be partly due to anticipated 5 star regulated safety. I can hardly wait for actual testing to begin.

I'd much rather industry be regulated by the buying public but there are some things that

not just moms .... a first reaction I've heard several times from folks seeing an Elio for the first time revolves around, a person not having a chance in an accident .... that's where I've seen being engineered to a 5 star crash rating with 3 air bags without any government regulation that they do so having a really positive impact .... there isn't a government standard forcing EM to reach those standards, its market driven .... while I certainly agree that in most cases big business has no conscience, I have less faith in government intervention

This is a contradiction: self-regulating and mandatory. The only reason that it's 'mandatory' - and you do say this - is that the market demands it. And THAT'S how this should work. Self-regulate based upon the demands of the market, not what is mandated by US regulations.
Ya, right, self-regulating corporations are going to listen to consumers when it comes to vehicle safety, energy independence, clean air, water, environmental, food, and drug issues. We must live on different planets, while sharing the same interest in Elio.

The driving public currently has high expectations for vehicle safety and high mpg ratings because we have it and only because it was initially mandated by regulation in the first place. Apparently you have confidence that big corporations in general (some may) care about the well being of you and yours as their top prioity. I have seen no evidence that's true, only the opposite with Corporate greed of many influencing their decision making process. I could be wrong.

self-regulation NEVER works.

100Ks of Americans are not dead, not injured, or not diseased because govt MANDATED seat belts (3-point), collision testing, air bags, anti-pollution controls (esp lead removal), made high-sulfur diesel illegal, imposed fleet average MPG rules.

NONE of those would have happened without govt regulations.

I don't care for either, but Government is more likely to be on our side and it's comforting to know some entity is there to intervene on our behalf if/when necessary. If you recognize and accept faith, please have some faith in the governments's ATVM review committee evaluating EM's loan application.

What's interesting about that statement is that seat belts were mandated and then we had to pass a law to require people to use them to protect themselves and their loved ones from serious injury or death. LOL(?)

I believe that government regulation is guided/controlled by the political agenda of the leader of the party in power .... war on coal, endless delays for the pipeline, mandating certain light bulbs, forcing the climate change agenda, killing the expansion of the nuclear power industry, etc, etc, etc .... it matters little if Solendra met the loan specs or not, with their political backing they got the loan .... unfortunately, all too often its only when there isn't significant political pressure (one way or the other) that merit comes into consideration .... my faith in government has been jaded by 30+ years of working in it
