Thread title was 'what the status of the atvm loan'. My records have it TWO YEARS OLD TODAY !!! JUST SAYING.

Well done Lilly May.

It is encouraging that EM has decided to take a very public and active role after these nearly 2 years, to strive for the ATVM loan guarantee. Really all we had heard was assurance that EM doesn't need the loan to go to production, which sounds good and all, but we on this forum have concluded that the best path is if the loan happens for EM.

Finally, EM has said "ok U.S. govt, if you are saying that we need to have more/better/harder proof of sales, then we'll see if we can make that happ'n, cap'n."

EM sent out a good FAQ email on the price lock. Would have been best to send that out first IMO, but better late than never.

I was told by one of the original funding "angels" that the company's financial picture has changed hugely (and for the better) after going public. However, he said, the ATVM is the best route for financing because it doesn't dilute the stock value -- no equity involved.

I'm still not sure I believe they can raise 270 million without the 186 million jump-start from the ATVM. But maybe, just maybe, it's actually true.

Or, ELIO could just start a GoFundMe account.

That is about what I'm thinking... just a little more oomph off the start. I'd like that 0-60 time to be down quite a bit. I've seen hub motors that are designed to be retrofitted into cars but the research was done a while ago so they must have hit a snag prior to production. Anyway, if you had a battery that you could recharge overnight and it just gave a good push. I was thinking the rear tire but a more simple answer may be to pull the starter and put an electric motor there instead. It won't take much to get the car started. You could just put in a more robust battery up front or perhaps replace the stock one and add another somewhere... maybe in the rear.

(50Kw is 67 HP and 80 NM is 59 lb ft of torque though max output is 160NM which is 116 lb ft)

For the weight conscious, that's... 86 lbs!
72V... So, add in 6 batteries?
How much battery would you need for a day of acceleration from stops? I would think a 10 mile range would be more than enough... How much battery will it take to power the 50Kw motor for, say, 20 minutes? I only need it to run for about 15 seconds at a time...

I know this is a couple pages back (and not related to the ATVM loan!) but I wanted to respond with a quick note:
You suggested using a 50kw motor for your Elio "booster", because it equals about 67hp. However, electric motors do not swap HP-per-HP with ICE motors. Because they are more energy efficient and have nearly 100% torque at 1rpm, you can get away with a much lower HP value for equivilant "thrust". Furthermore, the ratings for electric motors represent nominal operating load, not maximum; a 12kw motor might go as high as 20kw at peak power. Thus, for low-speed accelleration, the right 12kw motor should get you close to an equivilant 50hp ICE engine.

You are, of course, correct. I forgot about the torque being available at zero RPM. That makes my project a little more doable.
