I don't believe that is accurate. EM's statement about "20% margin" was directed towards "OEM" (Original Equipment Suppliers), and is double the current industry standard. "Aftermarket" has not (traditionally) been connected to the vehicle manufacturer. There are exceptions like Shelby, Roush, and others. Those Limited editions are not done at the factory, but shipped elsewhere for mods. If you have priced these types of "package deals" you have to be aware that the price difference is WAY MORE than 10% over cost. Someone else here mentioned "300% markup". In my experience, sometimes it is MORE!The one thing that is certain -- Elio-approved aftermarket suppliers have to agree to accept a max markup of 20%. That's kind of amazing, but it's true... at least for now.
IIRC, Em's plan is to take a "hands-off" approach, making a reasonable percentage from the sale of extras. Even now, they are inviting aftermarket manufacturers to submit concepts that "could be" offered & installed thru the marshaling centers. The "Skyz system" is an example of this. At this point in time...purely concept. And $2,000?!?! Definitely more than 20% markup.
