Respectfully.............I do happen to work in the real world myself. People miss deadlines all the time without getting fired. What is really messed up is the example Smitty gave in the post I originally quoted where someone recognized as good at their job barely missed a badly set deadline. I don't care how much the new CEO turned thr company around. A company that treats their employees that poorly isn't anywhere I'd like to work.
Your actions have consequences.
Your actions reflect on your credibility.
How much negative actions impact you depends on the magnitude of the problem the actions cause.
If you are the one who says "I can produce a deliverable by a date certain" and then fails to deliver when other things depend on your results, the people that you let down will have to deal with the problem you create by your failure.
Without knowing specifics it's impossible to know if termination was overkill.
