so far as I know, EM contracts with professional companies for its R&D .... example: IAV for the motor .... most of the rest of the components are off the shelf and have already undergone testing .... Paul Elio, company president, is an engineer and oversees all segment of the project .... here again, there is a huge difference in developing a motorcycle with mostly off the shelf components and coming out with a new automobile

I find that very surprising that Elio Motors does not have a staff of engineers to oversee vehicle development & design...

So...must I assume there is no actual R&D facility for Elio Motors?

I don't know anything about a staff of them but, as noted above, Paul Elio is an engineer and I have been given to understand, he actively oversees every thing along the way

From what we have seen, Elio only has about 20 employees or so, many of which are on the tour team. They have contractors do any prototype work. I doubt they have any R and D people. Only photos of R&D that are not advertisements so far besides pictures inside the factory are of the Elio P4 being built

Certainly does not look like a professional R&D automotive fabrication facility...almost appear to be a neighborhood body shop...

Here's a copy and past from last November that I made on another thread:

Elio Motors - Vehicle Designer and Future Manufacturer
IAV - Engine Designer; design and develop entire powertrain, including transmission and emissions
______ - Engine Builder
Technosports Creative - Builder assistant of significant prototypes (P2, P3, P4) and maintainer of P4 during tour
Altair - Engineering partner, designer of crash-test vehicles
Comau - will assist in providing the tooling and machinery necessary for the Shreveport plant
D.E.S. Group - prototype and production tooling

Perhaps Altair is the R & D group for the Elio vehicle? Just a guess.

at a $6800.00 price point I think refinement in it's first year will not be a sticking point.
Certainly the time frame presented is all screwed up.

I am just hoping it gets produced. They are breaking a lot of the rules that most car manufactures follow.

I think pretty much a skeleton crew. No in house R&D only a half dozen of engaged employees to development.

There is not much need for many right now until there is a product made.

What would they do other than get on forums like this and guess what happens next?

I believe the vehicle is already designed. There is just one stile one design which has been tested through three or four prototypes. This is a single vehicle launching along with its company. No need at this point for further R&D they are at the final tweeking point the next model P-5 will be what you get.
