Abuse of credit cards is what destroyed my marriage, and led to the big "D". (By her, not me, I never used one). Then the divorce laws in Ca. also hurt, but I survived and am now doing GREAT.

She left you for the big D? haha. jk.

Yep, finance issues are the number 1 reason for divorce.

How can some people talk about teaching kids finances as they buy them a car when they are 16. Maybe a $1000 car that they have to work for, but I see parents say their child is entitled, then buy them a $8,000 car when they are 16!!!!

Oh I could rant and rant on finances. and I'm considered a "millennial". It would go on about parents, kids, the gov't, colleges, blah blah blah....

You don't talk like a millennial. I thought they were all backing Bernie.
There is hope.

You would be surprised how many millennials don't act like what the media makes us out to be. Either that, or the crowd I know are different from the rest. <Political comment edit>
....now back on track....

Let me know how that goes over when you do tell them that the Elio gets inside parking and your wife and daughter get to draw straws over who parks outside. That will be an amusing post for everyone here. We should probably generate a poll on whether you will tell them, what will be the outcome, and see if Elio Motors will make a custom Autocycle Cover.
LOL... :(

Actually, it won't be much of a problem. My 17 year old (2nd daughter) will be away to college next year so her spot will free up. My 3rd daughter is only 14 now so she'll be turning 16 next Fall (just after school starts next year).

Now, I've always gotten my kids their first starter car but it's always in the $4-$5k range (hence the 2001 Prius). My 3rd daughter likes the Elio and has already asked "If I save up my money and pay the difference, can I get an Elio?" She said she likes that it gets such good mileage and that "new" is better than "old and busted".

Daughter 1 has finished college and is married with a kid. Daughter 2 is in the top 5 of her class and is 2 points away from a full scholarship on her ACT which she is voluntarily retaking. Daughter 3 is a straight A student who is just starting High School. Daughter 4 is ... Well, she's just learning to ride a bike.

I figure as long as the kids are working hard at keeping their grades up (and they do work long hours on homework), I'll help them with their first car. Daughter 2 IS going to work this year though. I want her to learn the value of a dollar and that doing well in school by itself isn't enough to ensure success in life. Many are successful in school and horrible at life while others didn't do well in school but excel at life. I want them to see and learn that balance.

Good to hear what other parents are doing, although every child and family is different. My daughter maintained her A grade point and earned a two year scholarship. I monitored every grade card to ensure she was maintaining her grade point. Her reward for maintaining the grade point was the Mustang. She hated the thought of having to ride the bus with other school children. Carrot and stick manipulation. Now she is working to make the Mustang payments.
This summer I allowed her to spend a lot of time with a more affluent family. I wanted her to see the effects of hard work and good choices. This fall she has to double up. She has to get the grades and make the car payment. I am optimistic about her future she wants more and is not afraid to earn it.

With all the things we work on in our lives, there is nothing that gives more satisfaction than having our kids grow into responsible and honorable people. Hard to say if it is good parenting, good teachers, good friends, luck or a combination of all. Congrats on your family. You sound pretty happy about how they are doing. My three sons have provided great satisfaction to me as we dragged their first car home when they were 16 and then got it running and ready to drive. We spent hours together swapping an engine, doing body work, replacing parts and chasing electrical gremlins. My son's know a little more about cars and we have a laugh about some of the things we did. Not fancy cars, but they got them around. Now have 3 grandkids and 3 respectable and hard working sons. Two in college now, but they are working hard to make their way. They all tease me about my Elio, but are all looking forward to borrowing it from me. My car has never seen the inside of the garage.
