From what I have read so far no motorcycle license is needed in NY. I reserved an elio can't wait.
Welcome from The Evergreen State, by way of S Florida, by way of Millbrook NY (just down the river.) You've arrived at a great site for all things Elio. There are many talented and skilled folks in a wide variety of professions, all ready to share information.Don't be disappointed when you research a thread thinking the information you are seeking will be there. Most threads start off with good intention, but VERY quickly drift off topic

Wish I could get a definitive answer on NY. I originally had NY down as no MC license needed (verified by someone) but then Elio Motors said on Facebook that a MC license IS needed.

Current states requiring a MC license: AK, GA, HI, IA, MD, ME, MN, MO, MT, NY?, RI, SD, UT, WV, and WY. Utah is about to be taken off this list.

According to Elio Motors, that is a lot lower, 4 or 5 at most for licences. It's helmets that have more states with issues, especially for young passengers.

I haven't stated this before, because it is an adversarial way to solve the issue; It will probably be a trivial mater to sue any state requiring MC licences or helmets for that mater. The Licence issue is possibly pursuant to discrimination based on technical ignorance of the autocycle in the law and applying some common sense reasoning. You can bet any state not falling in line in time, will get some legal attention. No state wants to waist money on this I guarantee it.

As for helmets for driver and notably young passengers, once the engineering data is gathered in a more presentable media, it's an easy win.
Paul had stated it was safer to not wear helmets in an Elio, and that stance can be a bit intimidating to states with any of that requirement. And I don't see that being difficult to back up with hard data. There are probably studies for that already in existence made around the time that seat belts became a reality. Ralf Natter would have seen to that.

I think you have it backwards, AriLea. Also, your map is outdated. There are only two RED states now.

EM (Facebook) has stated seven and also Joel Sheltrown stated six states require a MC license. I have personal correspondence from Joel, dated ‎ ‎October‎ ‎29/2015. Possibly some states have recently backed away from requiring a MC license but Utah is the only one that Joel has mentioned as being close to being done.
