on Elio's website they indicate plans to have two factory owned stores in NC .... one in Charlotte and one in Cary (Raleigh) .... hopefully the folks there will be trained in state laws/regs that apply to owing/using and Elio and be able to make recommendations .... somewhere I read that Elio has someone who is working with changing legislation in states that require helments .... if we get to the Elio Road Show scheduled to be in Raleigh in December, we will make it a point to ask their folks for further info

If Elio's Government Affairs VP is working on the State's legislative changes to exempt the Elio from MC Licensing Requirements...................the helmet issue won't be an issue.

we certainly hope that is the case

Jim
Both EM and the VP of Government Affairs say they are working on this issue along with the marketing, fund raising, engine build, prototype builds, factory setup, hiring, and everything else associated with organizing a new startup company and getting a revolutionary new vehicle to production. I am personally not open to a MC endorsement to drive an Elio so I hope they are working hard and efficient to get all the States on board by production.

As he is the person at Elio Motors I have had the most direct contact with I can tell you from my first hand experience that Joel Sheltrown, ElIo's VP of Government Affairs, is truly working very hard on the helmet and motorcycle endorsements issues. I know he maintains a list of exactly where things stand in each and every state and he follows up on these issues on a regular basis.

You can actually read about him and his experience, including a good bit of direct government experience, in this Wikipedia entry:

I'm kind of amused that they didn't say anything about seat belts. It's a double edged sword to deal with it. If they define autocycles as having seats WITH seat belts, then insurance companies will automatically adjust rates for that, since they would know the law requires it. But if not required, there is no way they can be sure you have removed the belts, or are wearing them. So then the state would have to require this in the law before the insurance will take that into account. When getting insurance for the Elio in the future, you may find they ask about it.
On the other hand, our motorcycle attitudes like to be free from such regulation. I'm willing to bet some insurance rates are cheaper if your state requires helmets. But NOT willing to bet much on that.

that is really good to know .... I've learned it seems that the top folks at Elio tend to be very tight lipped about the info they choose to release .... while that its not a bad thing, it sure leaves folks trying to make an informed decision without much to go on

according to the Elio website, NC still requires a helmet .... has anyone heard if there is an effort to change this and if so is there anything NC residents can do to assist .... how about the requirement to have a motorcycle license

Jim

You find out the name of your state representative(s) and contact them, let them know that the Elio has a roll cage, air bags, Electronic Stability Control, and it #1 does not need the driver to wear a helmet, and #2 does not require motorcycle-operating skills to drive it, so a driver's license should be great. Also direct the reps to the AAMVA document about 3-wheelers' recommendations for such things. :-)
