I hear things like this from time to time. I'm not saying that I don't believe you, but I do find it hard to believe. NJ Transit's NE Corridor was $20+ each way from Trenton to NYC during peak times. Here in Colorado CDOT is starting up a bus service from Fort Collins (where I live) to Denver (where I work). Only problem is fares will be $20. That's roughly six times what my commute is currently costing meCity buses are notorious for heavily subsidizing passengers. I looked at a couple out of curiousity (download their budgets, passenger loads, fare revenue; it's pretty easy) and tickets only covered something like 25% of the cost.
Trains are worse.
Try it yourself. Pick some light rail, subway, or metro bus system, find their budget data online. Might have to try several if they are good at hiding the data inside 500 page PDFs.
