Although I usually agree with you, I completely disagree with you here.

This pitch works great for the mass market. Very few people imo would only own an elio. They can't pitch this is the only car you need because what happens when lets say there are more than 2 people in your family? You need that other vehicle.

Like you said "its not going to be able to handle what an SUV does on the weekly trips to Costco" - which is exactly why this should be a second vehicle.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but based on the demographics, this car should be sold to primarily younger single people. People with families will not want this as their primary car because it isn't realistic. Old people won't want it either because it won't be fun to get in and out of (hence why many older people drive minivans - I don't blame them)

This greatly benefits the people who drive 2 hours to work each day and a simple car to drive around town.

Instead of buying a civic, scion or smart car, I think the average person would buy the elio and a truck (not a new one).

In terms of costs, this should be very cheap for insurance. Now I only have liabilitiy, but I pay only $18/month. This should not put a significant dent in someones wallet for maintenance. There will be very little repair costs for the first several miles and these cars SHOULD be cheap to fix. You gotta remember, this car will take 3.5 qts of oil. Now if you have ever changed your own oil, it will be ridiculously easy to change it. Most people don't work on their cars, but I think many cheapasses would but this car......the cheapAs usually work on their own vehicles.

Hey Horn,
I think you need to RE-READ the post BY jETPACK, that I was commenting on. It clearly stated that this was not meant to replace the family car. Also check the demographics that this autocycle is meant to fill. tho I don't completely agree, The primary group was older people, retired folks with the kids all gone. I'm not flaming you, just a little correction.
I agree wholeheartedly that the "cheap" folks will buy (that's me) but there are still 4 in my family. So it won't replace our "aging" mini van, or our "aging" suv, or our "aging" Civic HB, BUT it should make each one of them LAST just a little bit longer. Peace

I'm not flaming you either, but my response was towards ELFs.

IMO this will fail if marketed directly towards older retired people. I think they should go after the very young group.

If you are retired, you probably won't drive as much as a younger person...yes another assumption, but this car is for MPGs. The group who drives the most, along with other factors should be the one that is marketed towards.

Whoa!! I represent that!:eek::)
Then again, what's your definition of old?

I mean 65 and older group. My point is from my experience, the older you are the less likely you will want a lower to the vehicle ground. You will want one that is easy to get in and out of. Minivans and smaller trucks fit the bill well.....

You are probably right. When I showed the info to my 73 year old mother, her immediate reply was "I WANT ONE, WHERE DO i SIGN UP!" THEN iT WAS, "It looks hard to get in and out, never mind."

Tell your mother to give it a try. She may find she can do it. I'm certainly not letting it stop me. In fact I can't wait to sit in it in Portland. LOL :) Z

From Elio's Website:

How it All Began
Elio Motors was founded in 2008 by Mr. Paul Elio. The mission and desire of the project was to provide affordable transportation to those commuters seeking an alternative to the days offerings; at the same time provide vital American jobs.

Since then, the company has grown it’s appeal beyond commuters to other segments of the market. For students the vehicle provides a safe and reliable means to commute around campus. For those families with mini-vans or SUV’s, Elio provides an efficient and economical way to get to and from work. The price-point of the vehicle allows Elio to be an addition to this families fleet without adding any additional cost to an already stretched budget.

Elio Motors has also grown its appeal to collectors, retirees, motorcyclists, and anyone else looking for a fun, reliable, safe and economical vehicle to customize to their individual needs.

As you continue your journey with Elio you will notice our customers developing a strong attachment to their Elio. They have already welcomed the thought of her as part of their family. Our challenge is to help bring them the Elio of their dreams!

Did you know.?
1. Mr. Elio said: they feel that they have ACCESS to EVERY HOUSE HOLD in America outside of those with children under 16.
2. There will be small dealerships in STRIP MALLS by non-commissioned salespeople.
3. He believes they will sell 236,000 the first year and 450,000 the second.
4. Mr. Elio says he HAS to raise 15 MILLION.... in PRIVATE FUNDS.!.
5. It would cost about $138,000 to make one prototype.

EM needs about 15 million to start....today, they have about 5000 who have paid the $1000. that equals $5,000,000. It means they need to raise another $10,000,000 in the next year...to begin making elios..will they do it???

Thank you for those 9 year old stats. I would think those stats are even MORE relevant today.
Most definitely! And EM does not have to match the record sales of other cars like the civics, etc. There's just a huge market for this new type of vehicle! In Europe alone, they will embrace this wholeheartedly! It'll cost the British just 4,249.70 pounds and 5,133. EUR. (I based it on $7,000 price). You also have to realize that there's a lot of those just waiting to trade in their "other car or cars" for a replacement! We currently own a 2003 Civic and my old reliable 1999 Toyota Corolla stick shift- I can trade in one and replace it with an Elio. Why will you use your precious BMW or Mercedes for every day driving when you can buy an Elio for that purpose? Who says you have to "add" another car unless you're a collector. As far as the target market...I think once it's out....it'll appeal to almost everybody....I mean what can I say....it's too cute....it's design is updated and slick.....easy to work on for cheapskate like me that does all of the regular maintenance of our cars from simple oil change to break pad replacements. I let my wife replace the wiper blades so she feels she did something! LOL. It's my honest belief or opinion that it'll be a worldwide hit so EM better be ready to crank it up from the start. I also believe that Investors see this not just for domestic market but like I said for every corner of the world where there is road! Soon after, Em can introduce other power plant from diesel to electric (hybrid or plug in) so everybody's happy!;)
