I once had a car that operated the same way -- a homologated-for-street race car called a Marcos. The hood opened from the rear, and two hold-down pins (as they were called) were used. I used spinners rather than cotter pins (the loop kind), and they worked fine -- except for vibration causing stress cracks at the point of contact. Big washers helped with that. But they were a nuisance, and you had to get out of the car to open the hood. They were not secured from theft, either.
