Gas was over $5.00/gallon on the west coast and darn close everywhere else not that long ago for several weeks, and Paul was shopping the Elio project around at that time.
Basic logic here, folks...if it didn't happen at $5.00/gallon, then the gas price that will make it happen cannot be < $5.00/gallon. There may or may not be a higher price that WILL, but for certain it didn't happen at any price < = $5.00

$5 Gas Returns To Southland

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Gas prices in Southern California rose again on Monday, leaving some drivers paying over $5.00 per gallon.
CBS2′s Amber Lee reports the average price of a gallon of gas in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area climbed for the 25th consecutive day to $4.29 – over 50 cents higher than last month, according to theAutomobile Club of Southern California.
One gas station in downtown Los Angeles was offering regular unleaded at $5.19 on Monday, prompting at least one potential customer to exit his vehicle, snap of a photo of the station’s prices – and then drive off in search of cheaper gas.
Nationwide, the average price of gas jumped to $3.73 per gallon, while customers paid only $3.30 just one month ago.
Orange County drivers are paying an average of $4.28 at the pump, while the price of gas in the Inland Empire has climbed to $4.24 per gallon.
Breaking it down like that, my current 70 mile one-way commute and 27mpg fuel economy, I am using 1165 gallons of gas per year, and the Elio would only need 394 gallons. At current prices, the Elio saves me $2620 per year or pays for itself in about three years. My commute is 23 miles each way, 90% of it freeway. My current fleet average is 38mpg (depends on whether I ride the motorcycle or take the car).
38 miles per gallon is the same as consuming 2.63 gallons for every hundred miles.
If I sell both vehicles and commute only in an Elio, which should get 79.9 mpg on my commute (weighted averaging applied for commute style, here), then that is the same as 1.25 gallons for every 100 miles traveled, or a little less than half (47.5% to be more precise).
308.5 gallons consumed per year with current fleet
146.5 gallons consumed per year with Elio
Could save $550/year.
Fuel money saved isn't very compelling at current prices. It's more about the novelty factor. Us here love 2F/1R trikes, but the general public seems unenthusiastic about them at current gas prices and even $5.00/gallon.
Speaking of Priuses, I bet Elio would do really well in Boulder. What isn't four wheel drive or some sort of hybrid or electric vehicle.Lets not act like California is the rest of America......Never been there and never do. High gas prices, high taxes and people in Priuses....haha
