Sunday's games:
GB 29, Car 37 - Panthers almost let a large 4th-qtr lead slip away again in back-to-back games, but again, they come away with the victory in those 2 games, to be one of 3 undefeated teams; Newton had no sacks for Car, with 57 rushing yds and 1 TD. And lots of pointing by him after his running play, signaling first down. He did throw for 297 yds, 3 TD, 1 INT. I bet Rodgers was sore when he woke up this morning: 5 sacks, knocked down a bunch of times, hit a bunch more. Cam did throw an INT late in the 4th, giving GB a chance to score a TD and try for 2 when taking possession in the red zone. But Car's defense held on downs. Rodgers threw for 369 / 4 TD / 1 INT, although that interception was on their last play in desperation. Car ran the ball very well, GB could not. GB lost in turnovers 2-1 and had 1 more penalty. Car is 8-0, GB is 6-2. Car may come back to earth soon, as they have 5 of remaining 8 games on the road.
Cle 10, Cin 31 - I won't spend much time on this game; it was 14-10 Cin at halftime and 17-10 Cin at end of 3rd, but the Bengals pulled away in the 4th. Cin is 8-0.
Was 10, NE 27 - Brady was his usual self, throwing for 299 yds / 2 TD / 1 INT, no sacks; Cousins was avg, 217 / 1 TD / 1 INT / 1 sack. Was couldn't run the ball or didn't try, 57 yds. Lagerette Blount ran for 129 for the Patriots. Turnovers were even and Was had 2 less penalties than NE. NE is the 3rd of 3 teams to be 8-0.
Ten 34, NO 28 - The Titans win one on the road, and the Saints defense is exposed again, as they have allowed 8 straight quarters with the opponent scoring in each qtr. This overtime game appears to have been tied in the 4th qtr with 7:06 left, with a TD pass from Mariota to Justin Hunter. Then, the Saints punted, the Titans missed a 55 yd FG (doinked off the cross-bar), giving the Saints great field position with 2 minutes to go. The Saints try a 46-yd FG with 1:01 left, and it's blocked! The Titans got the ball first in OT, drove down and got a TD pass, game over. Saints are now 4-5.
Mia 17, Buf 33 - The Bills handle the Dolphins, as Tyrod Taylor had a strange passer line: 11 of 12, 181 yds, 1 TD, 0 INT, 3 sacks. The Bills running the ball was the story here: Taylor had 44 yds rushing, and the Bills had 2 RB's with 100+ yds rushing. Team total of?? 266 yds rushing! Buffalo had 13 penalties, imagine that. Bills are 4-4.
StL 18, Min 21 - Adrian Peterson had a day: 29 rushes for 125 yds, 1 TD, 2 rec for 18 yds. Foles continue to be unimpressive for the Rams, today he was 18 of 33, 168 yds, 0 TD 0 INT and 1 sack. Rams actually had more rush yds as a team, 160 yds, and Min lost in turnovers 1-0, but StL had twice as many penalties, 12 to 6. Don't look now, the Vikings are 6-2 and tied for division lead. They will get to determine their own fate in the division, they play the Packers twice coming up, including the last game of the season at Lambeau. Viking defense continues to be good, now allowing 17.5 pts per game.
Jax 23, NYJ 28 - Jax made it 21-16 Jets leading, with 10:18 left in the game, but the Jets answered with a TD and held on. Bortles for Jax, 381 yds passing, 2 TD / 2 INT / 6 sacks, ouch. Jax ran the ball ok for 98 yds, but the Jets? 28 carries for 29 yds. Whoa. Jax was better on 3rd down and had fewer penalties. Ah, here it is... Jax lost in turnovers 4-0. Fitzpatrick gutted out his left-hand injury from last week and had a good game, 272 yds / 2 TD / 0 INT / 2 sacks. Jets are 5-3.
Oak 35, Pitt 38 - Neither defense could stop the opposing offense. Derek Carr continues to shine for Oak, throwing for 301 yds / 4 TD / 1 INT / 0 sacks. Roethlisberger played well before he got hurt late, 344 yds / 2 TD / 1 INT / 1 sack. Both teams ran the ball well, 139 for Oak and 195 for Pitt. Oak lost in turnovers 4-2, were a bit better on 3rd down, and had 2 fewer penalties. Steelers are 5-4.
NYG 32, TB 18 - Neither QB was sacked, and Winston had a better day than Eli did. Jameis: 249 yds / 0 TD / 0 INT, while Manning: 213 yds / 2 TD / 2 INT. Game was closer than score indicated, as it was 20-18 Giants with 9:25 to go. Giants got 2 FGs to put it away, and TB fumbled on the last play and the Giants returned it for a TD as time expired. Both teams ran the ball well, TB lost in turnovers 3-2, both teams were good on 3rd down, TB had 3 more penalties. Giants are 5-4.
Atl 16, SF 17 - Atl had 4th down and goal at the 2 yd line with 3:02 to go, and were down 17-13. They elected to kick a FG and try to hold SF and Blaine Gabbert. No luck. Matt Ryan again has numbers that look good: 303 yds / 1 TD / 0 INT / 2 sacks. Atl as a team running the ball: 14 carries, 17 yds. Oh em gee. Gabbert was ok, 185 yds / 2 TD / 2 INT, but here's the big one: no sacks. The SF o-line have had troubles protecting Kaepernick this season, and they seem to have been able to protect Gabbert yesterday. SF lost in turnovers 2-0, but was better on 3rd down. Penalties were about even. Atl is now 6-3.
Den 24, Ind 27 - In a shocker, the Colts and Andrew Luck were able to get their poop in a group and bring down the mighty Broncos for their first loss; Luck was 252 yds / 2 TD / 0 INT / 1 sack. That may be his best line of the year, but I didn't confirm. Manning: 281 yds, 2 TD / 2 INT / 1 sack. Peyton continues to throw the INTs, but Luck throws them too: these 2 QBs are now #1 and #2 in most INTs for the season. And again, here's a team (Den) that either could not or did not try to run the ball: 14 carries, 35 yds. Colts ran the ball for 120. Den lost in turnovers 2-0, and were good on 3rd down at 6-12, but Indy was an amazing 12-20 on 3rd down against the Denver excellent defense. Well done Colts. Broncos are 7-1. Colts lead their division at 4-5, but this was a big win for Indy.
Phi 33, Dal 27 - I thought the Cowboys would get a win at home, boy was I wrong. Cassel's numbers were good, 299 yds / 3 TD / 1 INT, but he was sacked 4 times. Bradford's numbers were a little better, 295 yds / 1 TD / 0 INT / 1 sack. Running the ball, Dal 134 and Phi 172, advantage to the Eags. Dal won in turnovers 1-0 and were better on 3rd down. And, Philly had 2 more penalties. So it appears that Phi was able to do more with their possessions. Phi is now 4-4.
