BOOM! Classify Elio as a car and there would less likely be an Elio and if so there would be testing years out to meet auto standards.

With that said, Mr. Elio apparently made the statement at a Caddo Parrish Commission Meeting that they were currently working on legislation to classify Elio as a car so they would meet the CAFE credit requirements when discussing funding options and profit potential.[/QUOTE

Put this to bed. Contact Joel Sheltrown, re. 'Cafe Credits' to get the 'real picture'.

But if it's classified a car, what this topic is all about, to get the credits.
Per Goofyone's post above (#21)
Just to clarify this point. On Facebook Joel Sheltrown, Elios VP of Government Affairs, clarified the CAFE credit question by writing that this change in legal status would only apply to the CAFE standards and not to the vehicles NHTSA classification. It will still be a motorcycle to the NHTSA however auto-cycle type vehicles may be counted for CAFE credits. He said that there is a precedence for this as congress changed the rules for the ATVM loan program to allow three wheeled vehicles to qualify as 'Ultra Efficient Vehicles' even if they are not cars according to the NHTSA definition.

Is Joel Sheltrown close to having that legal status changed to qualify for CAFE credits by the 2016 production date?

Paul Elio is on record as making the 'real picture' comment about Elio not meeting the requirements and changing Elio's classification to car to meet the CAFE credit requirements. I was only curious if it's a real option. Never mind it doesn't really matter to me how much Elio profits per vehicle. The question is put to bed!

It's certain that cash is tight at this point. Just how tight, I don't know. Liquidity is the magic question; they need Comau to get cracking -- but they can't fire sale the stuff, either.
But haven't they had months to look over the "stuff", and be able to match companies with this equipment. It seems odd that their investment into this part of the project(Wasn't there 25 of their employees working to get the machinery ready for sale?) and then when I see this stuff posted on EBAY I scratch my (bald) head. The seller (a person not a company) has less than 100 transactions, most not for this stuff. How does an international company who deals with this equipment try to retail it (even with other outlets) on EBAY??

I think confusion arises because of the dual classification thing.
Paul may have been referring to the car class, has no affect on
the Elio remaining a motorcycle for NHTSA........as for Joel's
success it's been implied that one, of not all three, of the major
auto mfg's are in Elios court on this......but nothing factual has
been released yet......It certainly makes sense as it is in their
interest for Elio to get the credits & in turn make them available.

Darned if I know any of the answers to these questions. Have you tried calling Comau up to ask them? You could pretend to be a buyer for a $200,000 robot station and see what happens ...

This is a matter of law, not common sense.

Law or regulation? Regulations can be changed much easier some times depending on the issue.

More to the point. Given the fact there is 'precedent' for 'three wheel vehicles'
to come under the ATVM guidelines. That argues well for acceptance under
'Cafe Credit' regulation......better than even money, Elio gets the OK on this.
Now getting the bureaucrats to act on it is another thing altogether. That is
where having the 'Big Boys' in your corner (lobbyist's) can only help.......
