I've grown to like and respect the idea behind Elgin Dash and hope to get one as a collector item, even if the Elio is never built. Perhaps a poster print of the Elgin Dash signed by Paul Elio to hang in my garage. Someone posted a creative and provocative Elgin dash photo some time back that would make the perfect poster print edtion for any man's garage, but doubt PE would sign it. Hey, a fund raiser opportunity........signed limited edition prints.
$500 x 40,000 = enough to build a few production prototypes.

Of course I'd rather have the Elgin Dash factory installed and delivered in my Elio.

The other poll...
As of 12:43pm today...

Yes 27.1%
No 72.9%

236 paticipants.

Pretty cut and dried.
IMO, there aren't a whole lot of different ways to interpret it.
Some protested that only offering cut and dried was unfair.
Squeaky wheels perhaps?

The Other Elgin Poll
Happy?

not only would it not at to EM's cost, all factory options would add to their profit .... however, the Elgin has no relation to profit .... its Paul's determination to make it part of every Elio as a tribute to his father .... bottom line, folks who what an Elio will get an Elgin, period[/QUOTE]

My concern with the dash is probably like most of yours - it's the thing sitting in front of me whenever I'm in the car. Never mind the car's color, tire size, even the back seat - it's that ONE thing staring you in the face whenever you drive, reminding you WHY you don't like it.

My first car was a '52 Dodge Wayfarer (read, CHEAP) that was lucky to have doorhandles - had they been an option, I would have had to climb through a window - which thankfully weren't options. I spent several years staring at the "blank" plugs in the instrument panel while shopping junkyards for a radio, a clock, and a couple of other features like a cigarette lighter and an optional horn ring. There is nothing so maddening as having a big plastic plug staring up at you accusingly while you drive - saying "Why were you so cheap as not to order the optional _______?" Never mind the clock that wound itself with a loud "BANG" every day as the mainspring wound down and closed a pair of 6v contacts energizing a solenoid that kicked the spring back to the "fully wound" state. "Self winding" my arse, it kept me jumping regularly for several years, but at least I had a timepiece - and more important, got to fill a big hole in the dash.

Watching the St Francis University video explains the reason behind the Elgin dash. Paul was ready to hock his dad's watch just before he was able to get some money to continue the project (rather that having to get a job). It's pretty obvious that the Elgin dash is Paul's attempt to assuage a guilty conscience for being on the point of discarding his dad's watch.

We can try to ignore the poll by saying the sample is small and that most Elio buyers don't really care. I would submit that most of them who do not follow the forum have no clue about what type of dash will be installed. It has never been installed in any of the prototypes so most have never seen it. Granted this is Paul's dream and effort to honor his father and I get that but as a buyer I'd like to have an option for a dash that meets my desires not PE's. The operative word is OPTION.
