Wow, this thread has been some interesting catch-up reading!
Very gently, here are a couple of thoughts....
While the total number of votes concerning the dash are not large compared to the number of reservations, both polls are significantly negative about the dash. Many polls that generate the headlines these days only involve 1000 people out of 319 million. Many actual elections are decided by a very small part of the population. I was down in Texas back in the 80's and read an article stating that about 10% of Texans had voted in that election. So, just maybe, these polls may represent Elio reservation holders at large.
And, here is a great website with lots of instrumentation to admire, with prices.

Unfortunately your observation about small numbers inflicting their opinions on others is far too true.

It is most obviously impossible to get full representation so marketing and survey companies rely on small samples. This approach could be successful if the small sample is truly representative but grossly misleading if not. As an example, a school referendum that happened in my community was thoroughly defeated by margins that exceed 2:1 against. The school board had a survey commissioned and decided that the reason the referendum failed was because people wanted more stuff and so they are now back with a new referendum that is 50% more in cost. With blinders on and survey participants that were clearly biased we go to the polls on 5/5 and I fully believe that the referendum will be defeated at even greater numbers than the last one.

When looking at samples from the sited polls this is clearly a unique set of people being surveyed. I would suggest that many members voting in these surveys are far more opinionated than the masses that the elio will eventually sell to. Part of the charm of the elio is that it is different and I'd be willing to bet that when the masses see the elio that the quirky elgin dash will actually help sell the elio rather than cause the death, doom, and despair so adamantly predicted by the few vocal people represented in these surveys.

IMO, I think the small samplings are more indicative of "squeaky wheels" wanting grease. Everybody else, the majority, doesn't think it's worth the time/effort (aka - are okay with the status quo) to make noise about it...whatever "it" may be.

..........."I was down in Texas back in the 80's and read an article stating that about 10% of Texans had voted in that election."...........
A reasonable person would have to ask if it was a State, County, or Municipal election?
The office and the candidates?
Was the writer a reputable journalists, or a political hack with an agenda?

Thanks for the website. I'm looking for a reasonably priced speedometer for my '95 Wrangler.

The Poll
Vote for Elgin Dash
Love it 14 vote(s) 15.2%
Hate it 44 vote(s) 47.8%
* Mixed feelings 24 vote(s) 26.1%
I'm always too wishy-washy to choose 0 vote(s) 0.0%
I don't have an opinion 'cause I don't care 10 vote(s) 10.9%

What, for example, does "* Mixed feelings" mean?
Does it mean......... I hate "Idiot Lights" and want to kill the clown that came up with "Check Engine"?
(It was always right there, under the hood, every time I checked.)
(Can't remember how much the O2 sensor and diagnostics cost, but it wasn't cheap.)

I can read that poll to mean, of the respondents, most just want their car and don't care about the dash by 52.2% to 47.8%.
Others may read it differently.

Well, I suppose I am an UNreasonable person, then! I am not too sure I can quote a news article from 30 years ago word for word....the article was a cry for more citizens to register and vote rather than complain about what the "government" was doing. The fact that the very low percentage of registered voters who bothered to vote made the decisions for the rest was what really stuck in my memory.
Humbly, I would suggest that opinions about the dash are just that, opinions, and no one should be brow-beaten for having or expressing their opinion.
None of us are gonna say, "Nope, I guess I don't want an Elio, since you're putting that dash in." But, saying we wish for another dash, or for a color not offered, etc., etc., is what I thought this forum is about.
Yes, I just want MY Elio, any way it comes.
Glad you liked the website. I know folks are talking about changing out the instrument panel, but that could be expensive as well as a challenge, with all the "idiot" lights on new vehicles.

Which part of no don't you-all get, can't we get back to which side the door should be on, that was great stuff!!! curbs/gas stations/exiting into traffic and sure death, if not let's do the gas cover, that's always good for a few thousands opinions
A poll of less than 100 (out of 40k) lol
How about that other silly, getting 99,000 signatures to force gov't action, now that one hurt (I fell off my chair laughing).
I remember a daily count of sign ups!- lol

I wasn't attacking you. Or your memory.
I was making a general observation about the story you mentioned.
For example, would the same "journalist" have protested if his/her party won that election?

Just like I have mixed emotions about the Elgin dash. (It has too many idiot lights for my taste.) That certainly doesn't mean I can be included as an Elgin hater or Elgin lover.

Here we go again with someone clearly in a minority claiming to actually be in a majority based on some mysterious reason or other.

To me, the definition of a squeaky wheel is someone in a minority who is just not very darn happy about it.
But yeah, that's just another opinion based on my experience and my lifelong desire to always see things as they really are.
It does, however, make perfect sense to call a very small and vocal group who try to explain themselves into being a majority "squeaky wheels".
Giving a little support to this wildly crazy theory... history has never called a discontented majority a bunch of "squeaky wheels."

POLLS = FACTS. They speak for themselves. No more, no less. Right there in front of you. Get over it and try to stay in the real world.

Bravely speaking for all those poor unrepresented people by saying,
"Everybody else, the majority, doesn't think it's worth the time/effort (aka - are okay with the status quo) to make noise..."
Is totally unsupported, and wildly biased, presumption and speculation.

You're blindly speaking for others to support your own preference without having any basis for doing so what-so-ever.

Seems that there's been a lot of that going on here (yawn).

Some probably still wonder why in the world I use the terms rationalization and kool-aid loosely in these posts.
I cannot believe all the dung being slung. Really?
