I understand that reaction from the younger bikers. The retiring bikers will no doubt find the Elio on their own after they see it on the road. The AMA no doubt has similar regards to open trikes like the Slingshot and perhaps three wheeler trikes in general.
If motorcyclists in general embrace the concept (like most did with UTV's in the off highway crowd) of an autocycle, I think it reasonable to hypothesize there'd be, as we say in Maine, a s#*t ton of them sold.

All you have to do is look at the CanAm. Sure lots of MC people don't like it. Lots of them do. Enough like it that they sell plenty at 2x the price of a street motorcycle. It's the same for the Elio. As a new category, there will be a conglomerate of people form coming from all walks. There will always be haters and lovers for any vehicle.

And for a while the novelty alone could have carried Elio forward. The combo of low price, novelty -and- efficient green-credential is awesome.

Having said that, what I think will give the Elio longevity is the low price on a generic platform, which enables customization. The old VW would have died out earlier if it weren't for people discovering how insanely easy and cheap it was to personalize.

agree .... most of my friends who are bikers would be happiest if they could ride theirs every day .... in central NC that is possible most of the time but certainly not all of the time .... I would guess that in Maine, would have many more days where the weather makes riding a bike more of a challenge than its worth .... specially for older bikers, I can see them having a keen interest in an Elio

Organizations that aim at a specific group of people need to keep focused on that group and the needs or interests of it, like the AMA. So naturally the AMA will be less than enthusiastic. Fortunately it is made of individuals whose interests, while mainly in line with the group's goals, have their own interests and needs so the Elio will entice them to investigate and possibly buy one. Not only is the Elio cheaper than the CanAm, it's cheaper than their bikes and a lot more comfy when cold weather descends in many parts of the country and wet weather in other parts. For those with bikes that still have money after it's purchase, the Elio only makes sense! Can you imagine a Hell's Angel's or Bandito chapter consisting only of Elios? Maybe a distinction better left to the imagination (Elio, the outlaw's choice, like Bonnie & Clyde's Ford V8.).

Just some recent stuff on the P5.
But new tiers and a new audio system at the same time... Out of the blue? (no pun intended).
Wonder what else will jump out?

I would ass.u.me. the AMA would be focused on the needs of all their members and keep their aging members on or in motorcycles as long as possible. The Elio and other three wheelers are motorcycles and should be marketed to that huge demographic.

The coolest enclosed three wheeler being developed by motorcyclists for motorcyclists is the high performance TerraCraft Concept that tilts/leans providing the sensation of riding a traditional two wheeler. I wonder if AMA would wrap their arms around it? I would. I sit back and admire many of the Motorcycles/Custom Bikes and many riders are not concerned about cost. The second coolest enclosed three wheeler, the Elio, will be my first motorcycle.

Amazing how editors like to regurgitate press releases. I'd like to know more about the sound system ... claims of being modular and revolutionary aren't persuasive without saying just WHAT is so different about them.

Yes details would be nice, though they do make some fairly extreme (quality) stuff and tend to provide more of a pass-through, and speaker range of products. That would kind of make sense given EM's a la carte approach.

There were detailed sound system specs in the supplier video showing various speaker locations to include a micro sub woofer. Has the audio gear changed since?

As long as we are this far off-topic.... While the Elio won't scare off bikers due to the perceived risk factor, it probably won't attract many of them because of the low performance. Right now, the Elio is more like an enclosed scooter than an enclosed motorcycle. Some people will see that as a good thing, while others may not.
