A front-hinged hood is going to require a couple of simple "hooks" at either side toward the rear of the hood to engage slots cut into the inside wheel wells. In daily operation they don't restrain the hood, but should it be pushed to the rear in a collision, it would cause it to fold in the middle, keeping it out of the passenger compartment. That was done on my old Opel, and while simple, it would secure the hood from moving backward and through the windshield. and I've seen a couple of similar arrangements on newer cars that keep the hood from penetrating the cabin - even if the latching mechanism fails.

Yes, the hood is hinged in front. Yes, it's held closed by hood pins. Yes, it'll most likely stay that way since a standard type of hood requires a two step enclosure and a rear facing one only requires one. Since MOST people never even open their own hoods any more, it won't be an issue. For those who do open their own hoods, well, we don't mind. If you've ever opened your hood, you typically pull a release by the dash that unlocks and pops the hood up a bit so you can reach the release lever which is never where you remember it being. They do this to keep the hood from flying off should you accidentally unlatch it from inside while at speed.

Since Paul is trying to save money where possible while keeping quality up, it makes sense to do away with the double locking if he can. The hood pins in the rear, while not a favorite of many people, will function just fine and weekend oil change Dad can still open the hood to change his oil and check the filter.

below is a picture I took of one of the hood pins on the P4 when it was in Charlotte last December

Hood opening backwards is fine...but the real question is how do you build a sun visor that can swing to both sides?
Your drivers side visor has a pivot and a holder. Why not use two pivoting holders? You just unsnap the visor from one side and rotate it to the other just like you do your current visor or you can unsnap it the opposite way. Cost, not much more than having separate pivot and holder... if it isn't actually less expensive to do it this way.
