Louisiana has seen a lot of flooding in 2016. I lost a lot of stuff at my property in Denham Springs. I had two single wides and a 40' storage container full of furniture and antiques stored. I was able to salvage about half.

Dikij, if you go to www.cocorahs.org, you can review current and historical rainfall data from your area. Sorry to hear about your flooding. Having worked on the Mississippi and it's tributaries for years and having lived on a flood plain myself, I know what you are going through, and I sympathize. :(

Thanks, Bilge, I'm OK, It's only stuff. When I compare it with other life experiences it's of little consequence. My buddy that I have known since we were kids has brain cancer and is having to deal with a helluva lot more than some stuff. After all, I am in good health and in line to get an Elio.

On the topic of the crankcase vent/filter and speculation as to whether or not that design would continue into production, I recall the IAV-designed engine featuring exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) as a means of improving fuel efficiency. I can't see how the engineers would incorporate EGR while overlooking the proper venting of oil vapors from the crankcase, especially given the scrutiny and attention placed on oil in this new engine design (6-quart oil pan, unusually large volumetric oil capacity and reliance upon oil movement for cooling).

I haven't raised any concerns about it on any forum but I'll confess, I've been a bit concerned with the all-aluminum engine. Not only bad experience with an early '70's vehicle with aluminum heads but a dozen years as a machinist and now twenty-five years as a mechanical designer cause me to worry a bit. Cast iron sleeves in an aluminum block don't ease my worries any. If you understand the difference in the thermal expansion rate of aluminum vs. cast iron, you know why. But after a little research, I feel better. Here are a couple of excerpts for those who don't want to dig too deep and a link for those who might.

http://www.flame-spray.com/

"An important goal for engine manufacturers is to reduce fuel consumption, which can be accomplished by decreasing overall vehicle weight and improving engine efficiency by reducing the internal friction losses. Substantial weight savings can be achieved with the use of aluminum engines. However, most aluminum engines require cast iron liners to be used as the wear surface. Additional weight savings and potential friction reduction can be achieved by replacing these heavy cast iron liners with a low friction, wear resistant PTWA coating on the cylinder bores. Additional benefits of PTWA in new production engines include improved heat transfer and decreased bore distortion, which reduces friction loss and oil consumption."

"Flame Spray Inc., Port Washington, N.Y.,announces that the Plasma Transferred Wire Arc coating process has been selected by Ford Motor Co. to coat the internal surface of the aluminum engine block cylinder bores in the Ford Shelby GT500 sports car. PTWA provides a lower cost and lower weight alternative to cast iron liners, while delivering increased displacement in the same size engine package, and a potential for better heat transfer."

A Chorme-Nickle-Silicon (Nikasil), Nickle-Silicon-Carbide http://www.uschrome.com/nicom (NiCom) or https://usctechnologies.com/ (TriCom-600) is nothing new the motorcycle industry has been doing this for over 30 years it is a proven process and being the ELIO engine in in the 900cc range, it s a motorcycle engine. And should take advantage of all the tribal knowledge the motorcycle industry has attained. The Plating process is available across the country. These coating are tough you usually only have to replace the rings and piston when motorcycle engines wear out.
Example: the current Honda CRF450 used in motocross and flat track racing these engines are used and run with some of the highest piston speeds of any engine, day in and day out and only the rings and pistons need replacing. In the case of extreme destruction or increasing the displacement and over boring a re-plating is easily done (for aprox. $375 per cylinder). the transfer of heat is better then with steel liners and the cylinders expand the same rate as the pistons so better sealing across the warm up range is achieved with less oil blow by reducing cold start emissions. important feature dealing with the new Euro5 emissions standard.
You should NOT even think about using old fashioned Detroit automotive Technologies (it is out dated and dead). There is no reason a 900cc 3-cylinder cant produce at last 120 to 150 Crankshaft horse power (naturally asperated) with 120 Foot pounds of torque with 100,000 plus mileage reliability with very little to NO maintenance.
They already Exist and meet Euro5 emissions
Rotax 900 ACE HO https://www.rotax.com/en/products/rotax-powertrains/details/rotax-900-ace-ho.html
Renault Energy TCe 90
Also Yamaha and Triumph have 900cc Triples
The Austrian firm that designed the original ELIO motor at only 50 Horespower is a joke.
They ripped the investors off. I would be ashamed if I were them.
All they had to do was look around at what other engines are available. 50 horse power thats a joke for a 900cc engine. Sorry thats not a nice thing to say but thats the truth.
The Renault passes emissions. The engineering is done. They are stone reliable and in use today
Scrap the Austrian design.

Writeup on the P-4 version refers to a ""donor"" engine. Why is the IAV engine not to be installed in this latest ELIO? Without the final engine in place, it is not practicle to determine actual mileage capabilities of this vehicle---or is it? RB

this is the engine the Elio should use
