And there is maintenance on a CVT; plus it doesn't use a normal automatic transmission fluid, there is a special fluid they use that is at least twice as expensive. No maintenance on CVT's.. Traded in an 08 Sentra I bought new with 160,000 miles and CVT needed nothing.. CVT is more efficient and will help with the 84MPG goal..
Sometimes it's not a preference, sometimes it's due to physical limitations. When the automated manual transmission (AMT) shifts gears, it will let up on the gas (computer controlled), 'depress' the clutch, shift gears, let out on the clutch, and depress the gas again. All will be a smooth operation.
However while it shifts, the acceleration will cease, then resume. This will be noticeable, especially during hard acceleration which is how I tend to drive. I am a person who would find it irritating to feel it shift but I am not the person doing it. If I am not controlling the shift, I do not want to feel the shift. That is the reason I prefer a CVT or traditional automatic transmission....I would not be feeling it.
The AMT is a great transmission for people who do not enjoy driving, would probably have the longest life of all automatic transmissions, and is certainly the least expensive. I know millions of people around the world (outside the US) use these and are happy with them. I suspect performance minded motorheads do not.
There is noting wrong with any of these transmissions. It is all personal preference.
My 2016 Subaru Legacy has CVT but shifts like a regular automatic with 6 virtual gears and also has a manual mode with paddle shifters.. Works well so far and the economy is great.. I average 32-33 MPG with full time AWD in a mid-size car with a 2.5 liter engine which in my opinion is excellent! I suspect CVT will be employed as it is cheaper to produce and more efficient which will help obtain 84 MPG..
