Understanding Gravity and the Elio transmission;
Well, if we all understand that transmissions are but tools that allow us to bend and manipulate the big bangs in our cylinders to a parallel movement against gravity we're getting somewhere. All puns intended. LOL

I am going to skip all the confusion and order my Elio with the Manual Transmission. No auto pilot either. For my autocycle I will enjoy the pure simplicity. No GPS, I would even prefer to be lost sometimes. You see the best sights and meet some interesting people when you are lost.

I have repeatedly explained to my wife that I am not lost until I don't know where I am going. The fact that I don't know where I am does not constitute "lost".:rolleyes:;)

In the Configurator under automatic transmission, there is a drawing of the gear selector that has only 4 letters: P R N D

Do these letters mean it is a Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT)?

An automated manual would have the same gears as a manual transmission which does not have a park.
A traditional automatic transmission has a low gear selection next to the Drive gear selection so there would be the letter L next to the letter D.
I think a CVT would have the gears selection of P R N D.

Does this picture mean the Elio automatic transmission is a CVT? Seems to me it is.

If so, this is important.
The Elio is not going to have a CVT; if they were going to make that much of a change I'm sure they would let us know.
And just because a drawing shows one thing; it don't mean that's exactly what it will look like.

My 2016 Subaru Legacy has CVT but shifts like a regular automatic with 6 virtual gears and also has a manual mode with paddle shifters.. Works well so far and the economy is great.. I average 32-33 MPG with full time AWD in a mid-size car with a 2.5 liter engine which in my opinion is excellent! I suspect CVT will be employed as it is cheaper to produce and more efficient which will help obtain 84 MPG..

Don't be so sure on this.. Consider what Subaru did with their CVT with virtual gears and manual mode with paddle shifters.. Great economy and manual if you choose to use it all in one convenient easy to use package.. To achieve 84 MPG I feel CVT is the way to go and manual mode with paddle shifters will satisfy many people with only one product..

CVT costs more, and maintainence is more expensive. It goes against Paul's entire purpose for the car, "Lift the poor out of poverty by providing inexpensive and practical transportation." The Elio is meant to be a quality-yet-inexpensive car for poor people; any other fans purchasing one for any other reason are collateral, and will not be catered to outside of the MyElio options catalogue.

But all that aside, keep in mind that Subaru replaced both the automatic and manual transmissions with the CVT. The fact that the configurator still displays TWO options should be enough to shut down talk of CVTs.

One big difference; I asked the people at EM about it. No CVT.
What's your source besides what another company did, and a hunch?

No maintenance on CVT's.. Traded in an 08 Sentra I bought new with 160,000 miles and CVT needed nothing.. CVT is more efficient and will help with the 84MPG goal..
