B-52 parachutes? o_O Okay, I'm officially intrigued! :)
They used big chutes to slow down on the run way. The pilots would get to the end, release the chute and then taxi to their parking space. If it was too late in the day for the civilians, we would drive a pick up and drive over the straps to dissapate static electricity. If we didn't drive over it, you'd get a heck if a shock. We' connect the end to the pintle hook on the truck and drive in big circles to wind it up and then we would shove it into the pickup to take it for repacking.

Okay, just taking a guess here. Are you talking about Kirkland AFB? Strangest AFB I've ever been to. The civilian airport and the AFB used the same runway. Went on a detachment there back in '83.

If you mean Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, I was there for a couple of weeks too, in 1993. I flew with the Combat SAR unit, on the twin Huey, the PaveHawk and the PaveLow. Some of the most interesting flying I've been privileged to do.

I stand corrected. It is Kirtland AFB. I was out there for a couple weeks in '83 working on a Tomcat that was down for inspection. Messed me up having the mountains on the "wrong side" o_O [I'm a Colorado guy]....See how I got this back on topic?:D

The "gas cap" on a Tomcat is located on the correct side. :D
