That's pretty cool, but, are you ready to give up control of your driving?
And trust a machine to drive for you?

Absolutely not. Not for a while anyway. One of the things it represents is the pace of technology. All the vehicles made today, gas or electric, will be obsolete quicker because of this pace. Does anybody really expect the they will want their current Tesla in ten years? By then the battery will be failing and the programmers for the vision computers will be working with the new technology. Upgrades will become fewer and fewer for the older vehicles. The only way to avoid this somewhat, is to keep the vehicle simple. Like the Elio hopefully is.
On the other hand, having a vision computer monitoring your surroundings and alerting you might be beneficial. An infra-red HUD would be helpful too.

I think I'm becoming a little skeptical of the autonomous car for everyone. It's an expensive feature, and complex as heck(both hardware and operationally). That means lots of reliability and insurance issues plus the up-front costs. I think it will indeed arrive, and has. But tractor-trailers, buses, taxis and personal limos will all go first, with quite a long delay for any middle-class hardware.

I know the costs will eventually come down, but the operational complexities will always be there. Possibly a mixed mode will become available. Like a hands free cruise control you use between freeway and on/off ramps. If you go to sleep, it just parks in the nearest Walmart until you switch to manual mode. That reduces the operational exceptions but maybe not the cost and hardware reliability issues.

Ultimately they might make owning your own vehicle illegal for all but the wealthiest. They will regulate the new vehicles to where most people cannot afford the license fees. It will be "for our own safety". The taxi services will pick you up and take you where you want to go. The in vehicle information screen will automatically look up your preferences and tell you what's on sale for instance. When the vehicle returns to it's base, it will be automatically inspected for any damages or operational issues. Payment will be automatically deducted from your account, and your every trip will be put into a humongous database for evaluation. Heck, just for verification they will probably do retinal scans too. They will know more about you than you know yourself. But don't worry. It's for your safety.
