From Merriam-Webster:
Full Definition of PROTOTYPE
1: an original model on which something is patterned : archetype
2: an individual that exhibits the essential features of a later type
3: a standard or typical example
4: a first full-scale and usually functional form of a new type or design of a construction (as an airplane)

I take no offense. The P5 will need a great deal of work to be the pattern for the E-series. It does fall under a proof of concept definition, but definitions do not close the needed gap between the reality of the P5 and the start of the E-series. The E's were to be built in parallel, and for that to happen, they need a solid prototype to start from. The P5 is pretty, and may fulfill its main purpose as a fund-raiser. Unfortunately, any more comment on my part would come across as argumentative. We'll see what happens over the next six months.

Thanks for your reporting from the show.

No argument taken, just a statement of ones views. That is fine by me. You seem to believe EM should be further refined by now since the "E" series were announced to be built in tandem with the P5. I believe that the "P" series are a proof of concept, and with the addition of the IAV engine the concept is proven. The "E" series can be used to "iron out the wrinkles" as the saying goes. Neither of us are wrong, we just look at it in different ways.:hippie:

agree with both .... thanks for resolving it without creating a acrimonious situation .... bottom line, the P5 is what we have at this point .... it doesn't matter if any of us feels it should be more or less, it is what we have .... EM will keep moving toward production and we will keep on following the progression

I thought (incorrectly it seems) that P5 would have everything ready to go with minor adjustments, bolts tightened, wires and hoses connected; that sort of thing. Instead, I keep hearing that almost anything is open for "refinement". The Es were for testing, crashing, etc then production. Final colors and other similar things could be "adjusted" with the Es.

This is beginning to seem like the professional student always going back for just one more class and never getting close to a job. IMO we are at or past the "just build the damn thing already".

EM has one shot to make it, or not .... it would be a death-nail to the entire project for them to begin production until they are convinced their trike will be right .... I do believe that the P5 represents what has been learned from production of the earlier P's .... they are smart enough to know that there is more to learn in the real world that needs to be incorporated along the way .... do I wish they were to the point where we need to be making plans to get down to pick ours up, most certainly .... I suspect most everyone here feels that way .... unfortunately, "Are we there yet ? " chants don't get us any closer to being there

The biggest concern of mine is if the drive train, suspension, frame, and steering of the P5 are finalized. This is the heart of the vehicle. Other items are not as critical and can be changed more easily. But the items I mentioned must be finalized to enable testing and not delay schedule.

absolutely .... can you envision the firestorm that would erupt if reports from folks with low registration numbers picking up their Elios and not getting home due to mechanical failures ???? .... EM has to get it right the first time

yeah but if the heart of the vehicle is not ready by now..sheesh. My understanding is the engine/car design has achieved MPG very close to what Paul wanted. Either he can sell the first 50,000 at $6800 or not and if not he bumps it a grand. That's two of the four. It is already built with the percentage of US parts he wanted.

the P5 has been built and the motor installed for a matter of a few days, most of which have bee spent traveling in a trailer to LA and sitting in the show .... there are many hours of testing and tuning yet to be conducted .... can't speak for anyone else but when we pick ours up, I want it right .... if carrying out a project of this magnitude was easy, it would have already been done by someone else .... I truly urge anyone who can do a better job of producing an Elio type vehicle, at its price point, with its features to please do so .... sign me up, I'll take a serious look at reserving one of their trikes

ok but what are they "getting right"? All parts but engine are already being produced and have been tested. It is connecting all together into a unit. Yeah that has to be right but most has already been in the P4 and/or P5. I know it takes time but another year?
