I suspect Elio would go with a US manufacturer... Ford and Chevy are both Fortune 500 companies. Linamar may not be Fortune 500 but they DO make a hybrid powertrain and Elio already had some kind of relation with them.

... silently wondering how this will affect cost since THAT wasn't mentioned in the release...
I'd say it would stay the same. They are saving $120M and they don't have to build the motor themselves. That is already done and the new Elio motor will have already been amortized by the OEM. So, Elio will save at least $500/car and that would definitely help the bottom line and speed up when they become cash positive. Within 2 years, Elio will become the most profitable car company in the US if the numbers work out as Elio has stated.

Elio Motors signs MoU with Automotive Fortune 500 OEM to Provide Powertrain; Projects $120 million Research and Development Cost Savings
Download as PDF
September 27, 2018
PHOENIX, Sept. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Elio Motors, Inc. (OTCQB: ELIO), developer of the ultra-high-mileage, low-cost three-wheel Elio vehicle, announced that they had entered into a memorandum of understanding with a Fortune 500 OEM, to provide the engine foundation as part of a new powertrain for the Elio vehicle. Elio currently projects that the new powertrain will result in $120 million in research and development cost savings. The company is working with the engineering team at Roush to develop a new Elio prototype employing the OEM powertrain.

"Purchasing an OEM's existing powertrain has an enormous impact on the project, it helps both expedite the timeline, and it directly reduces our capital requirement by about $120 million dollars", said Elio Motors CEO, Paul Elio. "This powertrain will also greatly enhance the Elio's performance by nearly doubling its horsepower while still maintaining class-leading fuel economy at an affordable ultra-low price."

Roush will integrate the new powertrain into Elio's prototype in order to begin preliminary testing procedures. These testing procedures will prepare the Elio for production, which will occur at the Elio Motors manufacturing facility in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The new powertrain will push the Elio's performance specifications far beyond prior consumer expectations. The engine should offer nearly a 100% increase in horsepower rating when compared to initial Elio prototype vehicles. When combined with the Elio's low curb weight, the new powertrain is expected to deliver excellent driver response and a highly improved acceleration time. Even with the Elio's substantial increase in performance, the advanced technology in the new powertrain should enable Elio Motors to achieve their promise of ultra-high fuel efficiency.

I also saw this news release earlier today. This is very good news, but Elio still has no money to go into production. If they have enough money left to build a prototype or a beta with this new engine, Paul Elio could spend the rest of the company’s money going around showing it to others. I have lost any faith in this company, but I could be wrong. In any case, I have a $1000 all in with a relatively low number.

I forgot Ford was going to stop making cars. I'm not sure how much engine capacity they'll have available because of the shift they are making to SUV/CUVs... There may not be much of a change in production numbers as they weren't selling many of the cars to begin with. Well, except the Mustang, that is. But, it IS an interesting thought and would be absolutely great news! Buy American, Ford engineering is well established, and it should be very reliable.

Ford's smallest engine is no longer found in the US as they aren't putting out small cars any longer:

Engine: 1.0-liter 3-cylinder
Power: 123-hp and 125 lb-ft of torque
Transmission: 6-speed manual or automatic
EPA Fuel Economy (MPG): Manual: 30 City, 42 Highway, 35 Combined. Automatic: 28 City, 40 Highway, 32 Combined
Of course, the fuel economy is with the engine tuned for a much heavier vehicle.
They say
My bet is that it will be Ford's three-cylinder 1.0L (Fox) Ecoboost engine with cylinder deactivation. It seems to fit the specs alluded to in the press release and it's garnered many awards.

I hope your bet is wrong! No Elio for me if it has a Ford power train!

Why would it matter which OEM supplies the power train? Are your concerns technical or political?
What is political about a Ford engine? Promote the Elio as an American built car but with a power plant built in Germany. And I am not fond of anything Ford builds. They will never get close to the 84 mpg with this engine.

Which one do you need it to be?
