I agree with that William. If you can drive a manual shift in hilly country you can drive just about anything that has rubber tires. My second oldest son borrowed my 6 speed manual Accord for his drivers test. The examiner was dumfounded. Told me it had probably been over a year since the last person had used a manual shift car. Apparently almost nobody uses a manual for the drivers test. It's rapidly becoming a lost art.

That's very true; the new cars all have those mind numbing CVT's pieces of crud; the only thing the drivers want anymore is Forward, Reverse and Park.

After reading all of the gobble-de-gook on transmissions and their attempts to simulate what people in manual shift transmission cars do I am starting to think that if you don't use a real manual transmission car for your road test there should be a restriction on your drivers license. Clutch, Brake, Gas, Shifter, Hand Brake. Learn to drive that configuration and you can pretty much handle anything.
William, points well taken.

I'm sold on the auto. Elio even said the auto would get the best MPG, because it shifts perfectly ever time and the manual doesnt.

I've read through these pages but I'm still confused. The auto is gonna also be $6,800, right? And is it going to be a traditional automatic, or somne other form of auto?

Welcome Adamant, The automatic transmission will be an automated manual transmission (AMT). That is a manual transmission that is controlled by a computer. All that you need to know is you select drive and depress the gas pedal. just like a traditional automatic. It may feel different, the jury is still out on that one. It will cost more, how much, nothing is set in stone yet.

the Elio automatic transmission will not be a traditional automatic .... it will be what is known as a AMT (automated manual transmission) .... without getting into technical data I don't have, my understanding is it is pretty much the same as the manual but has some sort of gizmo that controls the shifting .... the manual transmission will be standard .... the AMT will most probably come at an additional cost

On price for the "auto" (AMT) = Optional at an extra cost
AMT = Automated Manual Transmission --- The manual transmission but It uses electronic sensors, pneumatics, processors and actuators to execute gear shifts. This removes the need for a clutch pedal.
Not a perfect explanation, but should give you the idea.

I for one LIKE the AMT !!!

I am always "pounding" the gears (paddle shifters) in my smart with NO clutch pedal, and my arthritic knee loves it :D

The thing that irritates me to no end in every paddle shifter I've ever been in is there's a noticeable delay when shifting. You blip the paddle and it feels like forever before it shifts. I know it's only like 0.75 - 1.25 seconds, but it feels like an eternity. Never have I been in a car with near-instantaneous paddle shifters. Would be nice.
