The auto clutch has some issues as with my Ford Focus and many other new cars. Your right it does use the 5 speed gearbox but the double clutch which converts it to an automatic won't shift as smooth as you can with the regular 5 speed. In my case with the focus gas mileage is great and its great while your under way but when a light changes to green the vehicle shutters as if your learning how to drive a stick. Ford has millions of complaints as do other makes but they all insist this shuttering is normal. They do say they can tweak it with a software update but some complain it's worse.

The 1962 Ford Galaxy 500 with automatic, could be roll started, get up a little speed for it to kick the engine over. When I was towing it to give the car away, the engine kicked in the front bumper came off.
One time a manual transmission was handy to have, Early 1980's, The coldest day in Knoxville, it was -24 degrees as I was leaving work around 5 am. The battery would not crank the Datsun pickup. Pushed it in the parking garage and popped the clutch as I was going down the ramp.
back then automatics had rear pumps and they went away in the mid to late 60's now all automatics have front pumps

The world is rapidly eliminating the manual transmission. It's obsolete and slow. I have one. My next car will have an AMT. Look at almost all AUDI cars (A3, S3, A4, etc) except their top luxury models and you will find the double clutch automated manual transmission as standard and the only transmission available. Look at any F1 race car or, for that matter, almost all professional race cars with the possible exception of NASCAR, but they don't shift much.

A Friend of Mine bought a 2015 Audi A-4 with a clutch pedal MANUAL transmission...

Admittedly it had to be special ordered from Germany.

If it shifts the gears for you, it's an automatic, no matter how it does it.
Correct... I misspoke. I meant that if it had a clutch, it is a manually engaging transmission... not that you have to manually shift it. An automatic does not have to engage the motor to the transmission except through the dynamics of fluid.

My smart's AMT sometimes loses its place when shut down. So, you have to shift though all the gears ( reteach the trans) That is a pain at times. the second thing is it slips the clutch at times in turns re engaging after a downshift.. These two things need to be better on the Elio AMT. I also worry about the cost of the servo motors if they need repair.

Does anyone know the relative cost of an AMT (automated manual transmission) and a CVT (continuously variable transmission)?

It looks to me like a CVT should be less expensive.
