Just saying 1,500 for a 1.7L Honda engine for a car that cost $16,000 civic.I got 250,000 before rebuilding top end. It now has 500,000 on the lower end. I hope the 3 cylinder gets 250,000 for $700.
It seems like many of the new cars are getting 200,000 miles or more with regular maintenance. My Geo has 225,000 with head rebuild due to burned valve. My GMC truck has 285,000 with no engine or transmission repairs. My Volvo 1999 has had the most trouble with sensors and throwing codes even while running good at 320,000. My son's mustang has 309,000 on it and running great. I have high hopes for the Elio to put on a quarter million miles. At $2.50 a gallon for gas that should only cost $8335 (assuming 75 mpg average). I spent about $54,800 to get 285,000 miles on my truck. Ouch!! Send my Elio soon!!

If the engine is 10% of the cost (which is normal for the industry), that means the engine costs $630 or so, and should sell for about $800 or so. They'll mark that up for replacement engines, so figure $1,000 to $1,200. Not too bad!
Do you think the 10% is a reasonable assumption? Given that the vehicle itself is much less expensive than average, but an engine is still an engine, I'm not so sure that a 10% cost would make sense. Look at the transmission cost.

I've replaced an exhaust valve in a Geo Tracker... cost me about $140 counting the cost of the valve and all the gaskets and oil and such. Well, it took me a few hours of work as well but I enjoy that kind of thing.

Ok, $54,800- $8,335 =$46,465 savings / $7,300 cost of Elio = 6.3 Elios. 285,000 miles / 6.3 =45,238. You could buy a new Elio every 45,238 miles with no additional cost. You could buy one of each color or one for the wife, two for the grandkids and have $24,565 left to pay taxes, insurance. and touring expenses.:D I would let you buy me a steak for the financial advice.

just got on the waiting list. I' m a independent contractor.( courier) I drive over 250 miles a day. I was wondering what the cost of a new engine would be. I figured I could buy an extra and swap it out when needed. Maybe I could work something out with Eliios RD department.
I would recommend installing a Gulf coast filter 01 Jr. I had one on a car. 0%dirt in the engine oil. Their poster child has over 1 million miles on a peterbuilt I believe. You can get all the specs on their web. 0 dirt in the oil = no engine wear. every 4-6 thousand miles, change the filter, which can be picked up anywhere, and add 1 qt of oil. The US and state governments are using the 01, 02 and the filter trailers. They are also can be added to your big rig right at factory. Since this is an add on, you still use your existing filtering system, it does not void warranty.

Problem is, new motor, and we don't know which filter it uses yet.
So we don't know if they make one for it yet.

Looks like a nice add on, but maybe overkill for a light duty vehicle like ELIO. I'll go with the best filter I can get, and see how it does. Definitely will replace the pan plug with an easy drain fitting in case a cross eyed mechanic ever does the oil change.
