Maurtis and Seth, a couple of hours ago I was thinking just that...

It's hilarious...

It would have been totally accepted and applauded in the 70's or 80's...
But I'm afraid it's just not politically correct enough for the new millenium.
I'm also afraid that those days are gone forever. :tsk:

"The lunatic is in my head.
The lunatic is in my head
You raise the blade, you make the change
You re-arrange me 'til I'm sane.
You lock the door
And throw away the key
There's someone in my head but it's not me.

And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear.
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon."

Language from today's broadside about the auto show:

As you know, no one has put together a vehicle that gets the rare combination of high fuel efficiency and low cost that and Elio Motors is bringing to market. Up to 84 MPG? Zero to 60 in 9.6 seconds? For a targeted base price of $6,800*? These are big, lofty, and ambitious goals. They raise eyebrows, and naturally, they raise the curiosity of those in the industry.

A couple of words pop out. First, they are sticking with the acceleration of 9.6 seconds. But now it's up to 84 mpg. Weaselwording again ... must be pretty clear they're not quite going to reach it.

They've always said that though.

I've never understood what 84 mpg HWY is. Ohio max speed is 70. PA is 65. KY is 65. TX varies between 75 and 85. ( ---> http://www.ghsa.org/html/stateinfo/laws/speedlimit_laws.html <--- ) So what is 84 MPG? Some how I don't think I'll get 84 MPG driving at the speed limit between Junction, TX and Van Horn, TX. (80 mph) And the EPA test provides no guidance. ( ---> https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fe_test_schedules.shtml <---)
I think "up to" is very wise!
Paul has already told us that the most recent numbers show about $500 over run and they are working to get it down to $6,800.

I checked with EM on the .84 G skid resistance. They said, "Simulation -- like everything else." So they haven't been quietly out hot rodding on skid pans. Sigh.
From my limited knowledge, I would wonder if their simulation was informed by early testing with P1.

Out here in WA, highway speeds are almost universally 55mph (officially). Freeway speed is 60-70mph. So yeah, clarity is lacking, but I wouldn't worry too much about it. I imagine, thanks to its small cross-section, that the Elio's efficiency curve will remain high at higher speeds than your average 2-seat car.

As to the "up to", I figured that is because the official city MPG was 49. Thus, at slower speeds you can expect less than 84, even though it is designed to achieve 84 when it is being driven at its most efficient speed. But I'm sure there are also lawyer-y reasons for that sort of wording, too.

There have been issues with several auto manufacturers (Kia, Ford) with claimed MPG numbers and owners not getting the MPG the label states and they have gotten in trouble for doing so. IMO Elio has stated they are trying to produce a vehicle that will get up to 84 mpg and they are still trying to do so and hopefully they will be successful. I can't imagine anybody changing their minds about buying an Elio if it only gets 81 MPG.

They've always said that though.
First time I read EM admitting that their goals are BIG, LOFTY, and AMBITIOUS! And yes, they have succeeded in raising almost everybody's curiosity but will it be enough to wake up the REAL PLAYERS who can bring this to production?

At the very least, EM is admitting to their BIG, LOFTY and AMBITIOUS GOALS! Here's what comes to mind:

TOP: EGO VELOMOBILE- PROJECTED/TARGET PRICE- $5,000.00. Human and electric powered.
BOTTOM: RAHT RACER- PROJECTED/TARGET PRICE- $35,000 to $45,000.00. Human and electric assist.
I say more power to EM for continuing to embrace their "target" base price of $6,800.00...no matter how big, lofty and ambitious this one important goal is!;)

I believe EM can achieve 84mpg with it's current design. I even believed that the old and discontinued 3 cylinder GEO motor IF it was TESTED on the P3, P4 or P5 is equally up to the task but we will never find out because EM was set on their ambitious goal of having their OWN engine! I'm still was not sold on the idea that they couldn't find a manufacturer that can supply them with engine in current production, be it 3 or 4 cylinder and meet their 84mpg and 9.6 sec to 60 goal. But hey, I'll take everything that EM is throwing at their target price of $6,800!
