The biggest crux of the tire pressure mgnt system, is this, when you get new tires they have to replace the sensors, they can run $100 ea. so just go ahead and add $400! to your next tire change..

what year did that kick in .... we recently replaced 4 tires on a 2011 and didn't have to replace any sensors

Yes, but not necessarily auto level everything-else standards. Like emissions and mandatory back-up cameras, and I'm sure a whole host of other things that add unnecessary (my opinion) cost.
unnecessary? Unnecessary? You can't expect a person to actually look behind their car before backing up, do you? Holy crap! That's like extra hard driving thingy stuff there.

Depends on WHO does it for you, some of the big chain stores (i.e. NTB) it's their policy to replace them every time, if it's just Joe the local gas station guy then he wont replace them.

Wont matter for the first run, they would be grandfathered as far as any NEW standards, but yea, I could see that. And don't forget all new cars have to have tire pressure monitors also...
Yes. Cars do. The Elio probably doesn't but here's the kicker... those systems mostly use the ABS system to detect on wheel going faster than the others and figures it must be low. It doesn't add anything to the cost of the car above ABS.

I don't think it's a law. It's just like changing the valve steams, the tire stores will try to sell you new ones, but you don't have to do it, but then you don't get a warranty for your tires. and they sell sensor refresh kits but they won't tell you that either.
