I've done this math before. I drive an '07 PT Cruiser because it has a lifetime powertrain warranty. I bought it new and it currently has almost 240,000 miles on it, it gets almost 24 mpg. Simple math tells me I've put 10,000 gallons of gas in it. At $4.00 a gallon that's $40.000. I commute 130 miles round trip a day and put between 11 and 13 gallons in it every other day. My commute is all high way miles and at 84 mpg those 240,000 miles would has used 2,857 gallons at $4.00 a gallon that's $11,428 for a savings of $28,572. Won't take long to pay for that second Elio! Weekly savings of $78.00.

None, actually. I have a 35 mile commute in each direction, so I put in 350 miles each week just getting to work. However, I drive a Chevy Volt, and there's a plain old 110v outlet in the garage at work. The combination means I spent 0 dollars on gas (and about $3.75 on electricity) going to work last week.

Unfortunately, I'm leasing the Volt and my lease runs out in just two weeks. I've loved the car, but GM financing's buyout price is ridiculous, so I have to wave goodbye. I'm looking at getting a used Ford Focus EV.

No matter the gas price, total cost to own the Elio will be so far lower than anything else.

When you look at overall costs; depreciation, insurance, and maintenance take a big piece of the pie. I expect the Elio to cost to own about 1/2 to 2/3 of a Civic or Corolla, which are the lowest in overall cost to own.

My Elio will cost about half what I paid for my golf cart. It will also get better gas mileage. Cart gets about 50 mpg. Besides it is so unique that I just had to have one to make my neighbors envious. I live in the countries biggest retirement community (100,000+) geezers. In time we will have an Elio club, h*ll we have a club for everything else. This will be my coolest toy since we sold the sailboat, now there is a way to spend money.

Oil is a volatile market. All it takes to raise oil prices is another political/military mess in the producing areas, boom, up goes the price. Heck, we've all seen it happen. A high MPG vehicle will help insulate you from these market swings, and this (The Elio) is something we should have done years ago. Really, in a way, it's a national security thing, too. Being less dependent on oil as a nation is a good thing...

I suspect many years ago it was why many chose to ride motorcycles and scooters.......a higher mpg transportation option.....along with the joy of the ride......as seasonal as it may be. The enclosed cab Elio will provide more people the option and allow aging bikers to continue having some fun on the ride. IMO

Note: I would be reluctant to rub the Elio in the face of a local gas station owner or anybody tied to Big Oil for their livelihoods.

Mine would have been zero as well, as I live at work when I'm there (3 weeks on, 3 weeks off), and my "commute" is about 25' from the quarters to the engineer's booth. However, with that said, almost all of my errand running when I'm home is with just me in the car, and my wife just isn't interested in some of my activities like rail photography, so an Elio will do around twice the mileage of my Honda Fit.
