Isn't the shifting mechanism built into the right side (blocking the possibility of a door on American models?)

If they build it for overseas, they can just do a mirror image so nothing needs to be planned for a conversion. I do think a future model could include a passenger door on the non driver side. Nothing has to be traditional.

I don't think they've been doing any tooling up to this point.
How can you tool for something when you don't know even know what you're tooling for yet?

What I meant was, Elio would just shift the controls to the other side of the car (as Marshall stated).

It appears to me that the P5, instead of being a final and finished version of the Elio...
Was (as I always had a nagging suspicion it was) simply a powered mock-up...
That was needed to answer some basic engineering questions...
And to get closer to the final version with it's own engine...
And, very importantly, to help with fundraising.

Once again, I don't think the P5 is a 72mph road-worthy vehicle.

But, I think all of this was a very good plan by EM.
Even if they had a tendency to blur their intentions and facts along the way.

I still say, "Outstanding."
