Compass Or Trip Computer?

Given how much we can do with smartphones, i wonder about the hands-free mounting locations. I do NOT like ANY dash mounted units.

The Bluetooth stereo (factory or aftermarket) is assumed.

I have seen, and even used, suction cup mounted cell phone holders. They are readily available, inexpensive, and just stick to an out of the way place on the windshield.

Yes California is one of a few states that makes this illegal but Jeff is not from California.

If you are in one of the states that make windshield mounting illegal you either use a suction cup mount on the side window, if legal, or you have no choice but to mount on the dash or console which is also frequently done with suction cups.

Wouldn't it be Much Safer to mount your GPS and cell phone in the console or glove compartment and leave it there until your next stop??

Have not seen this discussed. I use a compass when driving in unfamiliar territory. If I get lost it helps getting oriented and back on track, especially on cloudy days. Here in the mid-west most roads go north-south-east-west. Could use a GPS but I'm old fashioned and like maps.

I realize that is not true everywhere. Once in Pennsylvania I was given directions like this: "Well, you take this road 'til you come to the old barn that burned down ten years ago, take a left at the old tree that ain't there nomore and keep going 'til you run out of pavement."

I'm with you, aknaten. I had a digital compass in my rear view mirror on two cars in the past. It is extremely useful, especially on cloudy days when you lose your bearings. Also, a lot of fun if you are a geography fanatic.

The crafty ones among us might find "Thermomorph" to be the ultimate way to accomplish a professional looking modifications to your dash. http://www.thermomorph.net/ I just got some from Amazon yesterday.

Sorry Jeff but there are far too many people I know here who would like to suggest lots of other places. I'm surprised we've not heard from them as yet. LOL
