Interesting.
I wonder what that would do for licensing / helmets / safety ratings.
It'd look GREAT though!
There has been extensive discussion on the Cabinscooters Yahoo group about that. Given the vehicle would already be licensed as a car, you are already past the inspection process, and would have no problem that way. So then you are under the indulgence of the local police at any encounter.
Since it still has a seat and steering wheel, and is licensed as a cyclecar, probably a court would uphold that you don't need the helmet or licence. In practice you can wear a helmet just to keep the un-informed officers from stopping you all the time.

The last issue is the wiper and a plastic windshield. Simply keep the wiper on the car, but don't use it much. Use something like rainX instead, wiping only very sparingly.

As for me, because I'm very paranoid about rocks thrown from other vehicles, I'm always wearing a helmet in a open top Super. Something like G1 shows in the prior post. ( already own it, optimistic ain't eye? :) ) I have to replace my windshield every two years so I have good reason.

You have me seriously considering chopping the top off my second Elio to create something along these lines. However I am thinking of getting rid of the door to reinforce the chassis so I can have two seats fully enclosed in a polycarbonate canopy. Behind a windscreen section the canopy could be made to slide rearwards for ingress/egress and also be removable.
P51 style? I love it!. Might I suggest? A U shape to the butt-cushion of the seat, leaving a place to step your foot when you enter/exit. Very helpful when jumping over the side. That's also convenient for a 5 point belt system.

P51 style is exactly what I had in mind and the U shaped cushion is a great idea.

So I am the not-so-proud recipient of the first Elio crash award!
A friend dropped my model and, as we have been expecting would happen, one of the front wheels broke off!
It's now a two wheeled autocycle, more along the lines of a Lit C1, however, mine doesn't balance so well...
Guess what I'm doing tomorrow...o_O:rolleyes:

Just an FYI, I closed up holes and blemishes on the last two Year1 models and updated them to the 3d library. Hopefully the download-ables will reflect that soon. I noticed that you can not count on the website images showing that. At least not right away.

-Just checked and the cleaned up versions do seem to be there.

Those are great! So those are sketch-up files (skp). How do they become files that my Cube can read (stl)?

[EDIT] Oh. I see that's what goofyone is doing. Never mind!

If you want to play with this yourself you can. Sketchup has an .STL export plugin however the files it creates are not really that great. I have actually had better results exporting .OBJ files from Sketchup and then working though a cleanup step using additional software which outputs the .STL files which most 3D printers like.

There is a free, quick, and dirty way of accomplishing the cleanup process that works fairly well if you simply want to play with it for yourself. Simply load the .OBJ files you export from Sketchup into one of these solutions and it will clean it up and turn it into a pretty good 3D printable object.

If you have Windows 8 Microsoft actually has a pretty nice basic piece of software which is fun to play with and easy to use. It is mostly an entry level tool and does not have very advanced tools however it does have pretty some intelligent repair capability which can actually automatically repair many common problems found in 3D models.

Microsoft also has an online 3D model repair tool which is essentially the same repair capability as the desktop app however all you do is upload your files and after waiting a bit download a file with the repairs to the 3D model.

The company that actually develops this software for Microsoft is Netfabb and I actually have been able to get hold of a full version of their software which has even more powerful tools to clean up the files Sketchup creates and gives me a good base for advanced work.

G1, you've earned this. I decided to make an artists illustration of the sliding top for the super, per your suggestion. I updated the online model for that too.
There are a great many ways to implement the sliding issue, this was one. Ignore the door definition, given that you propose a jump-in jalopy :) .
This concept would allow opening windows in either a normal fashion or as a swing down,(lay-down to the outside). The swingdown would still allow the top to slide back, while the roll down would require being squared off a little more at the top of the window, given this geometry.
You know as a style work this somehow reminds me of the old sifi futuristic props with Robbie The Robot.

Could I have a 3d print of it to drop off at the Elio office in Mesa? I'd love to convince them of some day building some bench-built racers with the Turbo engine. All the automakers have their Super-Sport model, why not Elio Motors?
