Interesting considering, if I pay a grand or so and get the upgrade, I'd have all the features of a fully functional OBD-II through an app plus a little more like Internet and Bluetooth. That data has to be streamed from somewhere...

I feel like there specifically truncating OBD-II to push their upgrade package.

I don't think EM did it on purpose to sell the option as I first heard about the possibility of limited OBD-II support in the spring which was apparently months before Elio Motors made the Skyzmatic deal. However what I do think is that having that system as an option made it easier for them to make the final decision to use the less expensive ECU and only implement the basic OBD-II support which is all that is required for basic fault code troubleshooting and to meet the NHTSA FMVSS and CARB OBD-II requirements which do not require streaming data support.

I agree the information is there, it just needs accessed. Unless they replace this ecu with another one when you get the upgrade.

As I pointed out in my information above this is exactly what the Skyzmatic system does as it bypasses the ECU and connects directly to the vehicles CAN BUS thus acquiring the information directly.

We could easily come up with a cheaper alternative to the Skyzmatic systems if all we want to do is implement OBD-II support. All we need is a box which connects into the CAN BUS, grabs the data streams the same as the Skyzmatic system does, and then outputs the information via the OBD-II standard and connector thus allowing standard OBD-II accessories to work in the Elio.

All I would need is someone with the required programming skills as I have access to all the mechanical and electrical engineering skills and experience needed to develop reliable hardware.

I use Ultragauge http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/

I know its for normal cars probably not Elio compatible give the info you have provided. Maybe they could make one for an Elio.

If the after market sees a demand for it they will have a plug and play reader and programmer for the ELIO ready with in 48 hours of the first one the get their hands on. Simple stuff.
Units like the Powervision from Dynojet read every bit of data from the ECM display it in any one of many formats you choose. It will allow you to rewrite the tune or run a custom auto tune based on your needs. When HD switched to CANBUS They had the Powervision ready in 24 hours.
No need for a $2000 options it can display all information data you want and more. MPG both for trip and current trip information .
It can read every DTC and tell you what it means. it can clear codes .
Give them a reason it will be on the market by the time to fill your tank a second time.

I might volunteer for that job. I've been a software engineer for 35 years doing everything from low level bit tweaking of hardware up to modern GUIs. I'm working on exiting the profession in April but I could see using those skills to create a new toy for the new toy :)

Engine tuning should still be available via the Elio OBD-II port. Paul Elio has even directly discussed EM offering a kit which unlocks more power via this port as they have stated all along that the engine as designed is capable of more output however it is will be detuned for maximum MPG.

From what we know it appears that the only thing missing from the Elio's OBD-II implementation will be streaming telemetry data as this requires a more powerful ECU to host this data streaming via the OBD-II port. While this is inconvenient for those of us who would like to use third party apps or accessories which use this data as far as I can tell removal of the streaming telemetry data would not even violate Federal law or CARB emissions standards for cars as these apparently only require a standard set of sensors and DTS fault codes to report issues in a standardized manner all of which it appears will be included in this vehicle.

It would appear that once again the crafty folks working for Elio Motors have found a way to engineer a motorcycle to car standards while saving money in the process.

Hmmm... with barely a glance there appear to be plenty of development kits for can bus tools. Some are open source and some cost a bit of money but not large amounts. Many development kits even come with bread boarded as well as fully enclosed test systems.

Many many moons ago I remember researching a can bus architecture for an embedded project I was working on and I seem to recall at that time that many of the chip makers offered the tools (sdk and apis) as part of their chip purchase.
