The last cars to use OBDI was in 1996. I'm reasonably certain Elio would not be using 20 year old technology. In order to be OBD compliant it's OBDII. In order to export it needs to be EOBD compliant which is virtually the same as OBDII.

It's possible that the Elio will have OBDI or OBDII capabilities without being "compliant". Since motorcycles aren't required to have either, legislation would be kind of tricky there. I do think that eventually, the Federal government could re-classify 3 wheel vehicles as cars but for now, it isn't (of course). Hopefully, any state looking to wipe the Elio out of their state would consider that by removing an 84 MPG vehicle, they'd probably be raising total emissions in the state when those Elio customers go out and buy a '74 Nova instead and throw up more pollution per car than any 10 Elios could manage. (kidding about the Nova)

Motorcycles in europe are required to have GOBD compliant diagnostics in just 5 years. BMW motorcycles already have them. Harley is also already working with them. To release a new vehicle platform these days without compliant OBD protocols is VERY shortsighted.

Seems the OBDI vs. OBDII issue is 'still up in the air'...... according to last week's Town Hall meeting; "
Q. OBD, Which version will be available: 1 or 2?
A. Doesn't know if a decision was made yet. " (from Mr. Paul Elio)

This is actually an oversimplified version of the answer as PE spoke a bit more on this issue. He did say that a final decision had not been made however he also said that there is a very good possibility the vehicle will use ODB II however there will likely be certain limitations for security and liability reasons.

What this means to me is that the Elio may use OBD II protocols however it may not be fully OBD II compliant.

So did he say that OBDI was definitely OUT? That would have been a 'direct' way to answer the question, and then to clarify that their version may not be 100% OBDII compliant; since in the past EM has stated that it would be OBDI.

Since he said that the decision had not been made yet this by definition would not rule out either OBD I or II. However I did have to point out that he did specifically discuss OBD II support and mentioned limitations may be needed for security and liability reasons.

I have seen where EM has stated where they would use OBD I however when I had a chance to discuss this several months ago directly with Jerome Vassallo he told me the vehicle would provide limited OBD II support. All this just reinforces to me that both options have been explored and we will just have to wait and see what wins the day.
